Clapton overrated...he was really good, all his music pure genius. Crossroads, Cocaine, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Layla...all great peices of music, and all of his acoustic stuff too, Old Love is incredible as well as the acoustic version of Layla, as for people interested in acoustic guitar playing, get Paco De Lucia...he is really fast...incredibly fast, puts everyone to shame technically (including Vai and satriani) and he actually plays good music. as for the metal guitarist (Steve Vai), I recently saw a video of steve vai playing some pretty cool lenny(an SRV song)-like melody live, and i was impressed that he was actually able to put feeling into a song. Then i heard the same guitar melody in a hendrix jam. i think i'm justified in saying that speed metal is terribly uncreative...
David Gilmour's distortion guitar playing was incredible...
Page...the best in my opinion.
Zappa...he ate someones poop.
Neil Young...not very technical but incredible song writing.
Stevie Ray...incredible.
Steve Howe...great riffs.
Jimi Hendrix...what to say? live, hendrix is unlike any other major guitarist. he was truly an improvisor, much more so than clapton. Also, his technique and style are impossible to replicate, and his studio stuff is unconscious (see electric ladyland - how anyone could ever be able to create that album is beyond me). However, hendrix was limited in style, much like clapton, SRV, and most other guitarists. and kirk hammett, while being very good technically, just doesn't cut it (for me) when it comes to song-writing and style
Rory Gallagher...a great irish guitarist from the 70's, played great blue's music, puts lots of soul into his playing (Similar to Beck, Hendrix, Page, Ect.)
those are the guitarists i enjoy listening to.
