i'm looking into buying a fisheye for my canon Rebel EOS, i was wondering if anyone knew what a good one is and how much it would run me. i'm not looking for the best one out there right now, just something mid-range and affordable
i dont want to just "find one i like" becuase i really don't know what im loking for as far as specifics go on it, so i was trying to see if anyone had any suggestions then i'll go check them out in the store
whats the intended purpose? you are talking full-frame film, right? if not disregard some of the things i am writing and listen to the parts about what works for my camera.
for my 350D i've used an 8mm fixed and a 10-22mm. both worked for my needs. however, my camera has a 1.6 magnification factor. normal digital rebels do to. if you really care as to why, either google it, or ask me to explain it and i will. its not that complicated, but it is math/science crap.
in short, my 10mm is equivalent to your 16mm. my 8mm shows up as a severe fisheye effect. an 8mm on your camera would show up as a a round image in the middle of the frame, with 180 degree field of view both horizontally and vertically.
personally, i'd just go to the camera shop and ask some questions... but i'll give you a few suggestions.
look for like a fixed 15mm (aka prime) lens. a couple companies make them. on your camera 15mm will be a good for landscapes and some skiing stuff. not so harsh that it looks completely distorted, but enough distortion to make a very cool shot.
canon makes great lenses, but they are often expensive. sigma offers a lot of similar lenses for a cheaper price.
if you're just looking to get some shots and aren't SUPER picky about image quality, the sigma fisheye would probably suit you just fine. the canon lens is a sick lens with great glass, but it's often $500-600 depending on where you look.
and the crop factor skis4x4 mentioned has to do with sensor size - since the Rebel, Rebel XT, 20D/30D, and 1D Mk II N have smaller sensors than a traditional 35mm frame (which is 36mm x 24mm), magnification is required so that traditional 35mm lenses can be used with the camera without an vignetting or other cropping. so, according to the sensor size, a certain degree of magnification is required (the Rebels and 20/30D are all 1.6x, the Mk II N is 1.3x - however, the 1Ds and 5D are both full frame sensors, so they will not require any magnification since they'll be using the entire lens area).
so a 10mm lens on a Rebel is actually 16mm in terms of the 35mm equivilent - if you took a 16mm lens and used it on a 35mm camera, the two would look the same.
but anyway, as far as your lens choice goes, get something affordable, and over 10mm. i've used some 8mm fisheyes and they're fun, but just waaay too distorted.
the best cheap "fisheye" for eos is the Zenitar, it's russian, and it has manual controls, but for the price it's not too bad, and it takes alright pictures.
