New harddrives are being made that can hold 1.2 petabytes of storage. Final products are expected in about 5 years for about 700 bucks

5 years? why tell me that now. and what are you gonna put on it? all the porn ever made, every song ever sung? its pointless for a home computer. but it could probably be usefull if you have your own server or something

at my job this summer I was saving 300 gb a day of stuff and it was a small brokerage firm with only 100 machines in house and like 5-10 laptops out of house.
film studios sometimes have scene files that compressed take up 20 terabytes
and some picture files for rpint can be up to 4 gb.
even with huge stuff like that that hard drive would be hard to fill

It could be used in servers too....

yeah where I said that we saved 300 gigs a day that was on the server.
and the films that use over a terabyte of storage all save their assets on a centralized server.

$700 seems extremely underpriced. There is no way this can be entirely true.

Newschoolers.com should buy one. The movie limit could be at like 1 gigabyte. we could have 1 400 000 movies that sizwe and still have the biggest forum on the net. (100 000 gig of text would be something ridiculouis like 8 000 000 000 pages of text. or something

Wow a few years ago I got an 80gig an thought that I would never fill that, recently I got a 160gig to add on to the 80 and I dont think I;ll need anymore space for a ling time. A petabyte HDD would so unnecisary for a home user. Even if programs get bigger they cant get that big just because of the time that it would take to program all that data.

i have an external 120gb and 300gb in addition to my laptop's 60gb and i'm still constanly deleting stuff to make space. then again i have tons of movies/shows/games, like 17 seasons of the simpsons, 5 seasons of futurama and family guy, and i'll copy all my dvds to my hd for backup (each is about 4-8 gb). not to mention all the movies i download.
i would buy that.

why not put all those shows on DVD, you can get usually 2 seasons of simpsons on a 4.7GB disc. depending on the format of the movies.

then you have to keep the dvds organized and they could get scratched, etc. having everything at your finger tips on a harddrive is much easier IMO than having it on disc

haha put them on an old 100 pak spindal or get a book.
my dvd player will play all formats so i can just pop in a disc and play on tv
