Park skiing becoming like racing?

all my friends want to do now is ski park. literally every run. I mean we live on the gay east coast so skiing trails isn't THAT fun, but its not bad especailly if you're creative and can find powder or lips or something.
i feel like skiing park every fucking run makes it less fun. just how kids can get burned out if they race and thats all they do is ski the same run over and over trying to perfect it, i feel like sking park every run takes alot of the fun out of it. To progress and get better you really do have to go in the park alot and try to learn that new trick, but there definately in a trade-off...it becomes more liek work and less liek fun.
i worked and skiied out at alta for 6 weeks earlier this year and they have it right. at alta its cool (the ski patrol lets you) to buidl natural hits all over the mountain (when theres not a ton of powder to ski) if they don't get too rediculous. So you end up skiing sick terrain, hitting a couple lips (into soft landings), maybe dropping a small cliff, and finding a couple pow-pow turns. I feel liek park skiing is becoem way too gay and structured, and that it shoudl be more natural and spread out over the mountain or something. I don't know the solution, but i feel liek soemthings wrong.
I don't hate the park, i just feel like im gettting sick of it.

yeah i feel the same way. if i dont get out of the park i get board. natural hits are sweet and the pipe is a good way to mix it up

when i ski west coast i harly venture into the park becasue i cant ski much pow in PA. But i cant relate because my hill doent really have trails.

or they are doing what they think is most fun while skiing. who cares how much park people ski? what does it fucking matter? if its a powder day and kids are in the park i would almost be happy because its less people hitting up the pow.

I live in Québec and I almost always ski the parcs, but we have like 3 different ones... so I don't get bored that much, I like it.

absolutly. the real problem here is that not all of us get THAT much time on the snow so we feel obligated to get better at tricks or get better at lines or whatever. wouldnt it be great if we could just ski as much as we want, whenever we want!?!

try being on a structured park team... sucks cant do what you want only what the coach wants. not complaining cause its skiing but I think the point of freeskiing is to do what you want

i feel the exact same way, i like park but u miss so much if thats all you do. besides in nc whaer i mostly ski the parks suck, so thats one reason i dot like park, and im more into jumps than rails and there is 1 good jump in nc, and the resort its at is tiny

in tahoe, the snow comes and it comes alot, so most folk have a 100 plus ski for powder/lines and then a park ski for the 75 foot booters that await. like these past 2 dasy i have been in so much pow on my JPs that it is hard to turn and breathe, and now, since the snow traked in most spots, wwe head to the freshly made park. its a good tradeoff

i goto creek and i think its mad fun to make your own trails through the woods and find natural jumps espcially at the end of the night on the south trail toward the beginner park. i wonder if anyone knows what i'm talking about? espically on powder days or any days. creek isn't that bad for the hills and shit jsut make it fun

dude the whole point of skiing is that u can go out and do whatever u want. If u don't want to ski park than dont. I mean seriously no one forces u to go skiing

it really depends how the park at a certain hill compares to the skiing. At some hills the acctual skiing is really bad and the park is good, so ski the park. The day I went to whistler it had snowed the night before so all morning I skiied pow and once it all got skiied up I went and finished the day in the park. It was a sick day.

i ski at a hill that park is the only thing to ride and get a decent satisfieing run. but i find i get cold if i only ski park so i go to normal hills, do some real skiing and get warmed up.

OKAY! your dumb! sounds like your trying to get people out of the park and on the mountain? that means less pow pow on you mister! and btw, when its alot of snow, i do this, i come early, hit all the nice powder lanndings in the park, go ski pow for some hours, then ski the park at end of the day when its really good landings.. thats what I like! now you like to hit kids with a baseball bat, i think we should respect that, just that the kids kinda get hurt

i like to ski norm trails and just find little stuff to jib and do stupid stuff off

i live in wisconsin so i can only ski park. Skiing 2 second runs really isnt that fun anymore unless you do it switch

ive skied park all day pretty much every day this year. the ride from the the lift to the park is sufficient groomer action for me. if we would ever get some snow in the east id get out in the trees and on the steeps, but right now the ice and lack of coverage isnt worth leaving the park.

Although I myself can definitely relate to the sentiments expressed by the creator of this thread, to be cliche I think this is a clearcut matter of "to each his own." I live in Whistler and pretty much only ride park when it sucks balls elsewhere, but living here I have definitely encountered some east coasters who more or less want to ride park regardless of the conditions. At first I found it pretty frustrating because on a pow day the LAST place I want to be is in the park but you've got to realize that like a great many things in this world where you want to ski is purely subjective and if park is really what you're into than in many cases parkrats don't give a fuck if it's a pow day or not. I'm not saying I agree with that because, well quite frankly I don't agree in any way shape or form. What I am saying is that the word "skiing" means something different to everyone and I really think it's about time we stopped trying to criticize those people who's interpretation of the word differs somewhat from that of our own. To put a somewhat different spin on this I want to put forth the idea (not by any means an original one) that I think park skiing has become not like racing but like quote unquote "freestyle" skiing in that comps in the last few years have gotten downright rediculous. To me "freestyle" skiing ceases to be "free" if a comp comes down to which guy out of 20 guys to throw the same trick threw it marginally better than the other 19 guys, that's seriously fucked. I know this isn't a new issue but it's one that's driving me nuts, I don't know if I can handle another switch 10 fest I'm seriously going to lose it. As I said I know this isn't a new issue but it's seriously pissing me off, watching the x games on tv pretty much sealed it for me. Listening to Mike D be all like "well that was a pretty sweet switch 10 I guess, he didn't hold the grab QUITE as long as the last guy and he ALMOST touched the ground with his hand when he landed, the judges are difinitely going to take that into acount..." Fuck man that's messed up, it's what we've all been trying to avoid since twintips and the rebirth of skiing. I know there are a lot of skiers, pro and am alike who agree with me and I have a lot of respect for big name skiers who decide to take a stand and compete anyway and opt to throw rediculously stylish tricks that they know full well won't win. My argument is that perhaps there is some reason and substance behind this, and that perhaps something should be done about it. If we are to avoid "freesking" becoming regimented to the frightening degree that "freestyle skiing" has achieved then maybe we should pay more attention to the notions of those people who have made freeskiing what it is today. People bitch and moan about the evils of FIS but honestly, ask yourself, how different is a modern day big air comp really?

i like to mix it up but some days park is the only thing to ride, if it's powder there's no way im gonna even touch it though, jsut depends on conditions
