Purpose of pubic hair

It is my understanding that the purpose of hair is to protect our skin from the sun. So why do we have so much hair in places where the sun doesn't shine?

I always thought that the purpose was to keep the temperatue regulated because if a guy's balls get too hot or too cold, it would destroy the sperm and prevent a guy from reproducing. Otherwise, no idea. For girls I can't even think of a reason. Personally I think they're in the way. But then again, maybe they prevent infection. Yeah. That's probably it. Still though... if you want to prevent infection, STAY CLEAN! Pure and simple.
