Why do ppl ski backcountry and risk to get burried...

simple question...I need you to post what u think of backcountry skiing and why are u doing it? fun/risk/feeling/being in nature/being alone out there...to think..I dunno
..
In a year around 100 ppl die in avalanches...why are u taking the risk...

it's for a research paper on avalanches...

I just go by what the rescue boys tell me. and yeah not many skiiers die here in MT, and most peeps that do die bring it on themselves. I have skiied avalance prone stuff before and knew it just because I wanted to hit a specific cliff. But yeah do you ski alot of bc? if not just shut it. Because books don't mean that much.

i love skiing backcountry just as much as you guys do...
but I am trying to do research on how u could save sum fuckers life...
so the question was why are u guys doing it..I know why u are doing it cuz i do it myself...but as u may see its not that good for a research paper to say I do it because..its better when u ask 50 ppl..and I just said that a number of 30 ppl per year is bull....cuz it just is..there are more ppl dying...that's just like saying 5 ppl die because of an car accident every year even though we all know it's alot more...
so dont get me wrong

I don't ski backcountry, simply because of lack of resources/ knowledgable people to go with, but when the rush you get from doing something is superior to any other feeling you get from doing anything thing else in the world, you'll take risks to get there.

you've obviously never skied a powder weekday in the northwest, you can have three feet fall while your skiing, and it's almost empty as almost everyone's working, you should play hooky sometime and try it. as for back country, i usually do it fore fresh turns when the resort is tracked out or to build a booter. i always go with a buddy, usually with a group. we have the equipment, and we stay safe, the reward of powder a week after a storm far outways the risks.

i think its for the terrain and for fresh powder, if resorts never got tracked and had insane terraian than there would be no need, lets say that jackson or squaw had 3 feet of pow and u were the only on there, there would be no need to ski backcountry

for fun of coarse, the feeling of carving fresh turns and painting a master piece of lines left by your bodys movements in the snow. ther feeling of floating. being where many or noone has never been before. taking the risks and learning.

This may sound silly, but BC to me is like "adventure skiing"... all the constructed aspects have been removed from the sport and you are really experiencing nature in its wild form. for me, that makes the stakes much higher, and renews my respect for the mountain.

Not to mention the fact that BC is not all about skiing, it is about being in nature and getting your ass up the mountain on foot (never gone heli or cat skiing), which feels amazing.

Then, of course, are the other myriad benefits: no crowds, untracked pow, the feeling of comraderie with anyone else you see out there...

this woman knows were its at.

skiing in the BC when you know what your doing is actually very safe. if your riding with people you trust and know well and you know they know what their doing, its pretty safe. regardless theres still danger, but isnt there danger at ski resorts too?

i dunno if you ski BC, but the feeling you get when you summit a peak or somethin, look around for a bit, spend the day in the sun hiking and climbing with your bros, and then get to ski untouched powder on the way down, its unbelievable. a semi good BC day beats so many good resort days. resorts tend to be crowded, theres people you dont like, people who steal your lines, lots of things. i just find the BC so much more nicer. also its a good spot to learn your tricks and touch up on your skills. i dont feel as nervous whn im about to try something as when i do at my resort with a bunch of gapers and posers sitting around. i hate people watching me and juding me. BC is nice. learn about it and go ski it man. youll love it.

youll love it so much, that the risk of getting buried is worth it.

I've never had the luck/training/requirements to actually skin somewhere isolated, but what makes me want to get out there is all the reasons people stated already, and of course UTskier's pictures. How can you not want to do the same?

I like what you said, but you can be the most avalanche trained and knowledgeable person on the planet, but you have to use your training and knowledge to stay safe. If you just go out and ski cause its a sick day and don't analyse the conditions by digging asnowpits. etc. andmake good choices of where to ski you have as much chance of getting buried as the next guy who has no training about avalanches.

The reason for people skiing the backcountry is that they fell different they can seperate themselves from the crowd which many people do like to do.It might sound stupid but the closer you are to death the more you feel alive meaning that when the adrenalin enters your body you start feeling more and more awake idk why you should serach that but for me thats the main reason.Theres nothing compared to doing things  on the edge and anybody who ever felt that feeling whould be searching for more.Steeper line,deeper powder and dangerous lines,some people push it too far and some are being careless some just just unlucky

its like anything.  Once you get to s certain level you get a little bored.  In order to get that rush you need to experience new things.  weather it be learning new tricks in the park or skiing bigger lines.  I can have a good time in bounds but i really get my rocks off going BC.  I dont take unnecessary chances (beacon, buddy shovel, probe, food ,h2o etc).  Itsjust something different.

a hike usually takes a morning or so yea? so when youre skiing down after you've put in the sweat to climb , each turn is that much sweeter. and thats not saying you reach the top though because hiking takes time, effort and perservierence (sp?), you learn a lot about yourself.

also being able to look back and see only your line is just crazy.the satisfaction of being able to look up and say thats my line, i ripped down that hill.

 being able to see things that maybe other people/very few people have ever seen. being able to sit at the top of a mountain with a cup of tea w/ your dog and just take in the quiet, no crowds, no lift lines, its relaxing.

You can't really explain the feeling without being like a huge psycology major and knowing tons about the brain...But the feeling is just worth it...its great.
