X-Games - Nice try.

Whats worst about this illegit, half assed attempt at showcasing skiing, while focusing on making a profit ? All the kids out there who would have placed higher than half of the competitors and who will never get a chance to get their name out there.

Unless they open up the comp to about 40 to 50 people you will continue to see the same people, the same things, and espn will continue to put the same check in the bank.

Dont get me wrong, Tanners run, and wow, especially Peps, were some of the greatest runs i've ever seen, and believe me I've seen a few. But what about the dozen quebec rippers tearing shit up who wont ever get a chance to put their name amongst the likes of Candides... etc. What about all the groms in Alberta, BC, and the American Rockies ? The California crew, and what about the sick jibbers struggling to make a name in New England ? Hell, the midwest is bringing out rippers. Its a shame that skiing has a long ways to go before its eyes are totally open. Other than that, I'm pissed my man DC had to bail... I was hoping a fresh face would take the title.

yeah, but unfortunately it just doesn't work like that. Shur we would all like to see a fresh face, beat t-hall and those guys, but it didn't happen this year. maybe next year. and by the way you forgot about washington, on your list of places.

unfortunately that is the x-games and I'm not so sure if it will ever change.. they only care about the big names that keep on winning so that it makes a good story or whatnot.. its sad.. for example in slopestyle favre was 4th i think? anyways all they said was.. this guy is giving them a run for their money.. without showing his run to show how he got there.. its all about the us open and wsi.. those are the few big events that aren't about profit and gay shit like that

I saw some awesome runs in the X-Games but what I failed to see was the innovation and flavor that each skier was capable of and that would've been broughten by a few of the skiers who didn't make the cut.

There are so many insane new tricks that some of these guys can pull, and you won't see it because each rider is just going for the gold.

And to get that gold they need a perfect run, they are not going to risk that by pushing themselves too far and taking high risks.

It's a shame, but unless things change you'll see the same trendy tricks thrown>

Last year it was all about the d-spin, this year switch tricks have taken the stage.

My respect goes to the skiers like Pollard, Morrison, and the other riders who are setting their own trends and going against the flow.

I want to see inovation and someone raise the bar
in the x-games
(Cr's big spins are an example of tricks that pushed the limits)

He was taking a big risk by throwing monster spins that no one else was, but taking risks is how our sport will progress.

Not that this has a damn thing to do with the topic of this post...but I would suggest taking some sort of English class at school. Learn to put those damn comma's in the right place.

As far as the X-Games go...I watch solely for the skiing. Unfortunately, every time I turn in the TV to watch...I end up seeing the same three skiers over and over. Amateur recignition does not come from the X-Games. But I'm sure a phat check written to ESPN does. As long as there's televised coverage of a little freestyle skiing...I'll be watching...regardless of who it is. As for those not being recognized, they will have to do it elsewhere.

the xgames is just a show of how our sport has progressed. The us open is the one to watch when it comes to seeing new ppl. obody would watch the xgames if all they saw were some no-names wining the whole thing. This year was almost completely different tho. it was the first year when almost all prequalified athletes didn't even make the finals. Instead 5 of 10 finalists were the qualifieds.

the groups of of skiiers will slowly divide up. You will have the typical superstars that compete at x games like Tanner, candide and so on. But all the younger, or not as well known rippers will be video stars.

If you look at bmx, the best riders hardly ever go to the x games and if they do, they dont place as well as Mirra or Nyquist. They are video stars, and they prefer that lifestyle as to competing. The sport just has to progress, once there are more and more smaller budget/underground videos coming out it'll all change.

but can't you just wait to see how they pick 4 people per country for the olympic halfpipes?

unfortunately to make it to the x games as well as other major comps (such as the snowjam tour), you need to qualify thru other major comps...to get into those qualifying comps, you usually need to place well in...wait...those exact comps which are usually invite only. Unfortunately it's a catch 22. Unless you have some major sponsor helping you get into the major qualifying comps, you don't have a chance in hell of getting to the xgames. The US Open may be the only exception to this, but with almost a $300 entry fee, plus tickets and accommodation, that amazing grom from Alberta probably isn't going to be able to afford to get him/herself down there.

yeah the X games did suck, they showed like 6 slopestyle runs in total, i think more were supposed to come on at 2:30 on ABC, but that got cancelled because of the space shuttle crash, they should reschedule it or something

There are two kinds of skiers. skiers that do well in comps and skiers that don't. You can be one of the sickest skiers ever and not be able to hold up to the mental game of a competition. Its my feeling that the same people keep doing well in comps because the have the competiion mind set on top of the fact that they are extrodinary athletes. There were quite a few new and lesser known faces present this year, Rory Silva of all people won the qualifers and made it into the final round of slopestyle. Nick Mercon came out of nowhere, Chris Booth, Jon Reedy in the pipe. Most of these guys are my friends, so don't take this next bit the wrong way- did you see any of them do cork 9 to switch 9 stomped out in the flats, or boost flares legit 20 feet out of the pipe? Nope.

Of course as skiers, and in our own eyes, there will always room to expand the coverage and athlete base of our sport. Every year it gets more and more coverage. So Garrett, I totaly here what you are saying, but think back to the first ever X-Games that skiing was in. We've come a ways. Its only gonna take more time, or maybe less time if the avarage sponsored skier starts busting 20 foot pipe airs with regularity.

Jibtech i agree with you, but its more then just who does well in comps and who doesn't, its who gets lucky and who doesn't. Rex is easily one of the sickest skiers on the planet. But he was never really lucky for some reason. Nobody remembers him bein a part of the new canadian air force(which all those ppl are now superstars), and how he got 4th in the xgames a few years back, gravity games, and more. Yet he constantly gets screwed over with his luck. An example, his segment was lost in various videos like the playground. That must really suck. Tanners a sick skier, but there are ppl better then him, he has just been more recognized and lucky. Same with j-mo.

I agree with what most of you are saying. Especially that west kid, telling me I'm a whining bitch, what a fucking joke.

Anywho, my post wasn't exactly directed towards the calibre of talent in the x-games. In fact, it boggles my mind looking at how far things have come. Christ, everyone is doing like these truespin 270s onto rails. The standards have never been higher. I thoroughly enjoying watching the SKIING thats aired through x-games, but what the fuck is the deal showing all these kids out there 30 seconds of 3 of skiings icons? There is much more to it than that. I'm saying to not fall for it, do not be jaded by what you might think is a legit vantage point of the sport, when it is hardly that.

There really aren't many better ambassadors to the current trends in the sport then guys like Tanner, Jon, Candide, etc. But lets get real, this is nothing more than a drop in the bucket. Before you guys get all wound up about whos cleaning up in the x-games, lets not forget that its anybodys game on any day. Unfortunatley, and conveniently for ABC, ESPN, etc, they have a big hand as to who those 'anybodys' are. Could I find a better way of arranging this scheme ? Probably not. Thats not my job, but I'm just trying to shed some enlightenment to those who can't see through this 4 day Mountain Dew commercial.

i missed the x-games..... and i really dont care.... i think that the x games are bad and dont show the true meaning of the sport.... i was talking to my snowboarder friend that is 10 and i asked him if he knew any skiiers and he just rymed off the x games top 3...... it was real bad..... i asked him if he knew dave criction or steele spence or any of the guys from round here and he had no clue what was going on..... it doesnt bother me too much but i think the people that just support the companys that advertise in the x games and just pay attention to the x games riders are missing sooooo much in the sport..... just needed to vent yo

x games suck ass...all they show is snowboarding. its true that all they show is big names, but if someone were to come out and actually beat these guys than coverage would be shifted. the only reason people tune into watch is to see the best in each event.

petek, you said there are skiers outther that are better than tanner, um can you back that please. rember you talking about tanner hall here, the kid that went from lastyears x-games without anything in pipe to thisyear with a second. and the same kid who has 3 gold medals in slopestyle x-games, the same kid who won lastyears wsi and just about every comp 2 years ago, in know there some guys in his league, jon, cr, candide but i realy dont know of any aother people that are etter than tanner...so who is better again, i want to hear some names

you know what would give skiing much more 'hype' (i guess tahts what you wanna call it) make a comp taht was just snowboarders and skiers mixed, make them compete against each other, show the snow sport community what we can do, bring our best let them bring theres and then just bust out in slope style and half pipe. i think it would be pretty damn cool to watch

I agree with Garret and Dave for the most part but I feel that skiing gains a larger audience every year that it's in the X-games. I FULLY agree that its not a true representation of the sport as most of us see it, but neither are most competition based events. Whereas I don't much care for the gloss that is put on the sport in the x-games, any kind of big time media attention helps grow this industry. I guess you could say thats the silver lining to an event that really has nothing to do with skiing at all.

Downkink, that would be hard to judge, but I think you have a great idea.

I liked how they combined skiing and snowboarding in the ultracross (not sure how long they've been doing that)

In another thread on here it said that Jonny Mosely called in a day or two before the X-Games and told them he couldn't make it because he was busy filming. I think at the last second another of the rider's filled his position.

we saw steeles run on the xgames live raw feed from expn.com... i'm really not surprised that they don't show steele's run, cause it was pretty amazing, and it would make the judges and the xgames look stupid if people actually could see the run, and then see him not get a medal, and pep gets silver.

I forget who said it but they hit the nail on the head. Mountain Dew Drink lots of it and we will see the X-games next year. They are not there to progress the sport or sports, Mountain Dew (who ever makes it Pepsi??) paid espn a boat load of money to show case the X-Sports for generation X (what ever that's supposed to mean) and make every body think that drinking MD will help you extreme sport. I enjoy watching the six day commercial presented by espn or is that expn. Please don't read to much into it after all ABC thought that some big ass spaceplane blowing up at the tune of several billions of dollars is more interesting then displaying some people's hard work. Machines rule the world whether the machines are ruled by people is yet to be seen.
