if anyone here rides anywhere in europe, they will agree that it's so frustrating that hardly anyone is into new skool skiing like they are in the us- none of the parks are nearly as sick. most skiers still carry on hating boarders. even though the mountains are way bigger and gnarlier, although far less pow, everyone is really old skool, its fucking lame- progressive brands need to get the revolution going in europe so we can have sweet parks and proper skiers!

Dude where have you been skiing? I am living in Innsbruck Austria and skiing at Nordpark and Laax and their parks are pretty damn good. There is a massive newschool scene here, and the talent is better than anything ive seen in North America. They just held the Austrian Open here last week, and the top 5 competitors all did switch 1080's.
"although far less pow"
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT? dude where have you been again...
"everyone is really old skool, its fucking lame- progressive brands need to get the revolution going in europe so we can have sweet parks and proper skiers!"
Ppl here are all decked out in the nicest gear, next years shit and throwing the fuck down. If your opinion on european skiers is truely what you just wrote, you need to take a trip to Innsbruck or last and check out whats really going on man.
I'd have to agree with dishwalla. Get out of the USA to have an opinion of Europe. Europe's the shit, so many countries, so many cultures and languages. It's dope. I think i'll move to Europe.
i ride in val d'isere/ tignes which has one of the best parks in france- compared with mammoth or breck it aint shit. second, how much snow do most us resorts have right now? like, over 3m, all of them- ,look at european resorts, we have like 1/2 a metre.
i'm just saying, even though our terrain is way better, in general, the nu skool scene is hardly there
Innsbruck rocks!! This place is most of the other areas in Europe ahead of time in newschool.
But honestly, you just have to go up to PATSCHERKOFEL which is a fuckin shit mountain owned by the racenazis. If those guys see a boarder or a kid on twintips they give you the negative vibes.......
In Austria its all about the competition - Herman rulz - we gotta change that! There is lots of cool people in Europe - the scene is just building up. Wait for a season more and we will kick ass!"
I dont agree, its definently there. Ive skied all over Europe and each year its getting better and better. Check out the Scandanavian counties dude their so sick, all the solid powder productions stuff. There is also more to park skiing than Val and Tignes, check Les 2Alpes for example. the parks arent as big but the culture is there. I just dont think the mountains are as accessable, the resorts are more "resorts" and not towns/cities with ski slopes along the road so less kids riding.
i agree that there has been progress in some places, esp 2 alpes, laax etc. but i was in courmayeur in new year, prob best resort in italy, and they don't even have a park- my friend was renting skis, the shops had never even heard of twintips...
we need some mountains like echo mtn or snowpark nz which are just terrain parks to speed up the process
there are upsides tho... theres always fresh spots to build in the backcountry and the drops are never bombed out
There are a lot more upsides than you might think... in five years, when every kid on the mountain is dressed like a hoodlum and all of the freshies are skied out, you'll be remembering the good old days when you had all the goods to yourself.
yeah, i often ski at arlberg, and it rocks
there is a small park for sunny days and one year ago there were 3m of pow too
and for terrain park check the Zugspitze, its soo sick, they got a new park this season...
I think balony is wrong and ill explain why. I live in Spain and well thats like a third world country in terms of snow, too expensive and few resorts worth the cost, but still i think that he is wrong we even have parks here and there are some good, well, not the same as on the videos but we still get them. I think your problem is that you are so focussed on what you see on the videos that you forget the luck you have livin in France and having all that cool resorts in the alps, i wouldnt even think about going to a park in those massive mountains.
But as i told you the important thing is not the park or the backcountry the important thing is having fun wherever and however. Thats what i think newschool should be.
u make a good point 1977. i guess my problem is getting my friends into newschool and finding newschoolers to ride with- thats the main downside of europe. next season is gonna be my first, and i'm kinda worried that even in val d'isere, there won't be many like-minded people. oh well, i guess there's still snowboarders to ride with
also, it is clear that ns is way bigger in the us when all the films are filled with americans and canadians. my favorite riders, apart from sage are european tho- candide and jon
dude if im ever down South i'll let you know if you want to ride, or if your heading up here. Glasgow is about to get an xscape, a new dryslope (same one as Bristol and Aberdeen i think) plus im heading to Whistler for 5 weeks! Life is good. Thinking about going to Deux Alpes in the summer, can you PM me and let me know how much it was etc.
I was just in Portes du Soleil over the weekend and was actually suprised how decent their park was. It may not be a Mammoth or Whis, but I'd say it beats anything in Alberta.
Since I have never skied there before, what is an average base for that area, because there was hardly any snow. I mean, it was horrible conditions. I have also skied in Switz though when there was lots of snow, so I'm just wondering if I just hit it at a bad time.
The one criticsm I have about skiing in Europe is lift lines. Its a pretty simple concept, but somehow it escapes most Europeans...
And what right places are you talking about?? I am traveling to the french alps in the 07-08 season and I am wondering what places have the best park??? after all not everyday can bea pow day.
haha when us europeans come to america lift lines are so weird to us, we kind of love the struggle of barging past wailing ski school french kids and there old skool hung over parents
Hey! We have good parks in Europe too! Not as good as yours, sure! But that's quite good. But often the best parks are not in the biggest ski resorts!
Just go to Les 7 Laux, Le Grand Bornand, La Clusaz, Avoriaz, Les 2 Alpes...
These parks are better than Val D'isère/Tignes park!! But compared to US parks, they
Well about the snow, france is having an extremely shitty season overall, actually the last few seasons were similar, unlike SW or Austria, so he's right about that. And there are more gapers, well i wouldn't call them gapers but more simplistic skiers there that ski groomers, and less newschoolers, it's true.
i'm usually all for the "when in rome" approach... but it is much more fun to poach lines in the US and show them how it's done. it's amusing when people give you the death stare for invading their 5m radius of personal space.
where's the entertainment when you don't have to play "how the hell am i going to get away from having my body pressed against this very smelly man and closer to the attractive guy with good goggles while releasing as many bindings as possible"?
Boloney what are you talking about, how long have you been skiing in Val d'sere? I visit Tignes a few times a year and have done a season over there, and there are a hell of a lot of good skiers in Tignes and Val. Do you actually spend the season there or just go on holiday to the resort? Some of the world's best freestylers are from Europe, and Tignes has one of the best summer parks around. (Admittedly it was shite last year due to the glacier melting...).
European backcountry skiing is unmatched too. As for the old-skool style, i guess there aren't many rappers and gangsters in European resorts...
ahh, team ksm member- i respect what you guys are doing pushin uk scene. what i hate is the english punters with no clue about skiing wasting the freshies and scorning baggy pant wearing skiers/boarders. Methinks park in val now better than tignes- if it wasnt for rubbish snow of last few years, terrain is sick- i've ridden there since i was about 4
summer park is chill, but only until end of june, otherwise its all slushy by about 12. what's y favorite powder line in espace killy- did you ever ski pisteurs couloir in val or pramecou n. face in tignes- they are sick
Dude I would go to Austria or even eastern europe they say that the resorts there are really old and rusty but the snow is great and also is really cheap, Russia might be the next cool spot for snowboarders and freestyle skiers. By the way, i've read in this forum that Europeans like freeride not freestyle, well, for me freeride is just as freestyle as the park, and yes the new school scene might be bigger in the US but we got better mountains here i think.
Laax ain't shit to Mammoth...even if there are some good skiers here, the videos of the us open were so gnarly, I couldn't believe my eyes...It'll take us here in Europe some time to catch up with the US.
I haven't been to Innsbruck, but if Dishwellas right, Switzerland is like 2 years behind Austria...
Yo I live in grenoble and les deux alps has a great park and a good freestyle scene. Sept Laux also. If you ever wanna chill and go skiing at sept laux or les deux alps on a specific day, PM me.
