Space Shuttle Columiba explodes. terrible

at a about 9 this morning the US space shuttle columbia lost contact with NASA. over texas parts of the shuttle were seen on fire burning up in the atmosphere. it is suspected that a chunk of ice of the main fuel tank broke off and damaged part of a wing. god bless those who were lost and their families.

The space programme does not make life BETTER! It makes life EASIER! There's a big difference.

God damn some of you guys are arrogant and thick. The real heroes of our time are the ones who don't get nearly the respect or the glory they deserve.

I am no longer going to participate in this stupid arguement, you guys can fight out your petty arguement if you like, I don't care. I still respect you guys I just disagree with some of your morals. And to all those people who just wrote shit in here without reading or thinking, a big 'FUCK YOU' is headed your way.

Take away mechanics... people learn to work on their cars, take away bakers... more people can make cakes. Take away astronaughts... well not a whole lot of people can go into space and perform the zero g experiments and everything else that the conditions of space are required to carry out.

I think with a smaller population where that kind of obscenity doesn't really happen we appreciate it a lot more and have learnt to much more appreciate the value of a simple life. i didn't really read much past tim's 4th post or so, but i agree with him 100%. it's definately horrible, and i can see why they cover it so much(that should only be because it's extremely rare) but like he said it's no different when 7 average joe's die in some car crash, from diseases, or get murdered. really guys, what makes these peoples' lives so much more valuable? oooooh they took a shit without gravity. i don't mean to mock these guys, but they aren't helping the human race at all. they never did anything to make themselves heroes. they are wasting our money if anything. do you think it's right for taxpayers to pay billions upon billions of dollars for these people to walk around on some shitty planet that doesn't even have any ski resorts? don't get me wrong, i feel horrible for their families, but i feel even worse for the kid in my county who cam home to find his parents and older sister shot several times and the house torched. i thought about this for a while, and i still don't understand why people feel worse for these 7 'heroes' that died yesterday.

readin this.. I think tim has made a single good point.. No human lives are more valuable than another. That's a fair point, and I agree. But waht people contribute to the world is NOT EQUAL. Crack whore vs. Einstein. who contributes more the further life on earth?

Now... another social experiment if you will...All you pole-smoking anti american hippies, think about this. WHO is it you hate? Bush. Guess what, so does 48% of america. Who else do you hate... Congress, the Senate, mabye a few celebrities. The BIG name people from our country. So you hate them. Look beyond that, look to the cultuers that make up our country. There must be a reason that millions of people have immigrated here. They devolope their culture here (Chinatown anyone?). America may not be liked by some othre countries, but the truth is, it's not america. It's a few hundreiths of a percent of the population (0.01 at most). I can point out people from a lot of countries I hate. I can point out Stereotypes of other countries that I hate. Does this mean I hate the entire country? NO, I look deeper into the culture. I respect the for what they are. I UNDERSTAND that their is a huge difference in culture in the world. Geremany where meat is number the number one food vs Inida where cows are sacred. Palestians vs Israels. There are many other conflicting beliefs in the world, adn the only ignorance shown is from those who won't look past that. Those are the ones who are truly ignorant. Theya re the ones creating turmoil in the world.

yikes.. all i wanted to say was that shit... i wish i knew more about what they were doing and who they were, so i wouldnt feel like such a dumbass, and secondly, i was skiing around the time that it crashed, and i was getting onto the lift and this one lady looked at me, and then at my coat (columbia) and started sobbing right there in the lift line. it was downright freaky dudes.

somewhere in all this clutter of rhetoric there are some valid points being made, and believe it or not most of them are saying the same thing although the message is getting lost in semantics.

let me see if i can clear it up a bit.

the major issue is one of 'importance'. who is more important than the rest of us. the use of this word seems to be confusing the issue. we are using this word to describe the worth of a person when it is really a moral or personal value. something important to me is not necassarily important to you. it was said by one individual that if they and their family were to die it would not have the same effect/impact as these 7 astronauts. another person said that all life is equally important. semantics. my life and perhaps yours may not be as PRODUCTIVE or BENEFICIAL to society but we are all EQUALLY IMPORTANT. there is a difference.

a mass murderer or drug dealer does not further mankind but by a moral standard they have an equal right to life and therefore are equally important.

now for a controversial bit. it has been said that to value one life over another is an americanism (i hate the use of the word america, more on this later). to this idea i do agree. to assign value to a life is a product of commercialism. everything and everthing has a specific value based on supply and demand and the current views of that society. by valuing one life over another we do not increase the importance of said individual we diminish the quality of life for everyone else. communism countered this by having all citizens equal in the eyes of the society. unfortunately because of the inate greed of mankind this idea can not survive. SOMETHING has to be worth more, it just has to, otherwise how can i be better/more powerful than the next person. this idea came predominantly from the U.S. primarily because it is the chief democratic and commercial country in the world.


now for my final thought while on the topic of word usage. and this one really bugs me. THE UNITED SATES IS NOT AMERICA. this miss-nomer has been going on probably since it's inception, and yet it is incorrect. the proper title is the United States OF America. the u.s., canada, and mexico make up north america while many countries including brazil, guatemala, columbia etc...make up south america. together they make up the americas. the U.S. is a part of said americas and NOT america itself. canada could technically be called canada of the americas as well. it would be the same as calling the president of the united states, the united states. to call the citizens of the U.S. americans is also technically incorrect. it's simply easier than the alternative which would be....well i don't know. what do you call citizens of new zealand? or the united emirates? hard to do because of their name.

West, I'm trying to get you to think outside of the square you live in. For all the people who believed in their course they were very heroic. Sure you don't like it and from your point of view they are scum, I think what they did in bombing the WTC is bloody awful too, but think of it from a different angle okay? That's all I was trying to do.

And don't bash Mad_trix Andy, he's right. The space programme at this stage really doesn't do anything to make mankind any better. It really doesn't. Say what you will.

And to whoever it was who made that 2nd to last post, you're quite right. Sorry I forgot what your name was but nevermind. You're right, humans are all equal and what they contribute is not equal. That's what I've been saying all through this. It doesn't matter what you contribute to the world, you as a person are just as equal as any crack whore or astronaught or politician. I rival the sentiment that what you contribute makes you hold more value as a person above any other.

And I don't hate America, you guys are the ones saying I do. I hate Bush, and as you said so do 48% of Americans and most of the rest of the world. I have plenty of good American friends. I just hate the attitude of a lot of Americans. A lot are so incredibly stupid when it comes to anything outside their own lives and their own country. They hold very unworldy views about politics and many other things. Face it, you guys here are among a minority, especially guys like Andy, Sweetcoz, Gravteck, Kamikaze etc. (Sorry if you actually aren't American). You guys are actually intelligent and have some sense. More than half the Americans I talk to think that NZ is a lake in Australia and asked me how I knew English. I mean come on. America is becoming dumber and dumber, just look at your TV programmes. But I hold nothing against you, just Bush and his domineering power tripped politics and the people in your country who are so ignorant that they don't realise it.

Ok, Tim is right on. Seriously, it IS terrible that it happened. But these astronauts were just doing there job and something happened to go wrong. So there's your tragedy. Now look at other professionals in this world, such as doctors and lawyers. Granted they dont die doing their jobs, but when a good doctor passes on, it rarely makes headlines. THERE IS NO PRICE ON HUMAN LIFE- and whoever was saying that people will adapt if there are no mechanics or bakers, then people can adapt if there are no astronauts! There weren't any astronauts until the mid 1900s, when people started adapting to the desire for knowledge of space. So everyone get over it. Granted it's bad, but Tim's right. These were ordinary people doing an EXTRAordinary job.

I'm just gonna say I'm 100% behind andy in this discussion. I can't understand why in this time of national (worldwide) shock and mourning you guys are saying we're overreacting and stuff. NASA is a great program, these astronauts were the best of the best, inspirations to millions of people. I think we were all still drunk saturday morning; seeing this on tv sobered us up real quickly. I'm not gonna say this is 'worse' than 9 people dying in a train accident, but that happens everyday and you can't get caught up in it or you won't have any life to live. President Kennedy's assasination was the death of one man, yet everyone still remembers exactly where they were when they heard the news.
The wife of a college friend of my dad was the backup to Christa McAulliffe when Challenger exploded in 1986. She was now finally scheduled to go up on one of the upcoming missions. Maybe it's hitting a little closer to home for me, but this is a huge deal.

I have read every single post in this thread and it just makes me angry.
You don't hear on the news if doctors die do you? Or nurses, or teachers, or other people who keep the nation running.
I found it shocking and sad when I heard on the news about the shuttle crash. It was horrific and I'm sure that 7 fine and upstanding citizens were lost. I still would like to argue the fact that you cannot put a price on a life. Everyone was created equally, and just because they may have made some bad decisions in life and disadvantaged themselves, are you going to tell me that their death doesn't matter? Put yourself in other people's shoes and think about it for a minute.
On the topic of the American stereotype: I know quite a few nice Americans, however, you do see and hear the people who contribute to your stereotype. If these Americans didn't think that they were God's gift to the earth, maybe this stereotype would be diminished.
If everyone in this world worked together (I know this isn't going to work and is an idea of a Eutopia) then maybe we could be heard and tell the leaders of our country that we DON'T WANT A WAR. We need to work together and stop having fights. But then again, if we can't manage it on a website, it's certainly not going to happen to the world!

How does any of my argument relate to poltics. If you've noticed SVHucker stepped into the argument on MY side, and he's always been against me in arguments about politics. If anything, the arguement has to do with personal beliefs and religion. We established that. The space program is very important to me. I've always followed it since I was a little kid, and my family went to view a shuttle launch in Florida. I am now trying to step in and prove to people that those astronauts' affect on society/the human race were more important and positive than that of the average person. How they are symbols of courage. And how when they died, a large peice of America died with them. People jumping into the arguement with nothing to add besides the repition of what was said before should just stay out. We've already addressed the points people are posting. Read the damn thread.

And PhattSarah... you're telling me that Astronauts are no more important than the average Doctor or Nurse? Does the average doctor risk his life every time he does his job? The average doctor is generally overpaid. An astronauts salary is around 40,000 - 70,000 USD. That's like a quarter of a doctors STARTING salary. In fact, the average network sysadmin makes about that. Doctors are an integral part of todays society, yes. However, astronauts are an integral part of TOMORROWS society. They do the research so new cures can be developed for diseases though uncurable, they do work to study things such as muscle atrophy, effects of zero g, etc... all of which tomorrow's doctors will eventually use. The experiments run on the space shuttle could save millions of lives eventually. And Tim, do you realize that when I talk about the space program, I am talking about everything connected TO the space program, I'm talking about all the offshoot research and stuff... already said all this stuff... and I'll say again 'RTFP' Read the fucking post.

People have to realize that the space program is more than just telescopes and travelling to other planets... most of the research they do is done to benifit people here on earth... this is probably the 4th time I've said this... why can't you people get it into your head.

My point was that doctor's save lives on an everyday basis, and if a doctor dies it doesn't get on the news. Yes, the space program may be benefical to medicine, but when you think about it, how many doctors are working on cures for Aids, cancer and MS? This would be a much larger percentage than the space program. I understand that muscular atrophy is bad, but personally I think it is more important for life threatening diseases to be cured first. If the money that is poured into space explortation is given to medical professionals on earth, or to the education system, or people who are starving and homeless then we might see results in problems that need fixing now.
I understand that you're very passionate about the space program Andy, but you need to respect other people's opinions. They may have causes that are important to them that they feel would be benefitted better with the money used in space. The world isn't fair- we need to get used to it.

i think that if a doctor or another one of the aforementioned professionals lost their lives on the job you would hear about it... at least in the comunity in which it occurred... firemen and policemen who loose their lives always gets media recognission...

You would, because its not common. And don't you remember the HUGE fuss that was made over the police officers and firemen that died on September 11th. However, Doctor and Scientist are hardly what one thinks of when you think of 'life threatening job'

its not like you don't become an astronaut without knowing the risks involved. You have to accept them - if you can't handle them then dont' become an astronaut. If you don't like car crashes dont race cars.

A space shuttle blowing up and seven people dying is horrible. I feel for those astronauts' families, friends, and their respective nations, just as I feel for anyone else who dies, under any circumstance. Death is death is death, no matter how it comes. It's horrible, period. I've read over the other posts in this thread, and it seems pretty sad to me that something that was started as an expressing of grief, sorrow, and sadness has turned into something so ugly. A little bit of decency, understanding, and patience goes a long way in times like these.

So wait... saying someone knows there are risks immediatly discounts them as heros? I thought that that was the definition of heroism. So, you're saying that if a soldier, who intends to save his friends life by, say, jumping over a grenade to sheild them from the shrapnel, isn't a hero? because he knew he would die? That was such a stupid thing to say.

And I didn't say that your life isn't important because you didnt risk it. I just said their lives were MORE important BECAUSE they risked them for a completely benificial cause. You are putting words in my mouth.

Andy, so what is it exactly that astonauts do that is so bennifical to the human race? I mean it has to be pretty dam good if you're starting to compare them to a war hero.

Sure there are many positives of the Space Program but don't you think a lot of money is being wasted? Lets say they didn't send this space shuttle into space and used that money to pay off a 3rd world country debt - no one would have died and you would be helping a nation more than any space research could.

Don't you think this would be more important than floating around in space for 16 days. I mean what have they accomplished in 16 days up there that was worth 50 billion dollars?

ALRIGHT kids i dont mean to bring this thread back, but i just read some very beneficial facts in the feb 10 Time magazine..

I think these facts will support all sides of the argument, so dont think im taking a particular side. First of all in gregg easterbrook's editorial he states that the space program is not cost efficient at all. originally when the space program began, projected costs for flight were to be $5 million in todays dollars, but instead each launch costs $500 million.

Also, Nasa in recent weeks cancelled a program called Space launch Initiative to design a much cheaper and more reliable replacement for the shuttle. And along with the cancellation of such a program, they announced that they would continue to operate the current shuttle fleet until 2020. Thus making the flights in aircrafts with 40 YEAR OLD AIRFRAMES!

And although B52's have flown that long, they dont endure three times the force of gravity upon launch and then 2000 degrees farenheit on reentry!

i think the space program would be beneficial if they were more economically thinking. the fact that nasa insists on sending a crew on EVERY shuttle flight is risking human life on trips that can be carried out by robots.

there are ideas of a 'space plane' being constructed for when people are REALLY needed.
