I was waiting in peak line on saturday and, as always, a snowball fight broke out. There was close to 500 people in the line, and I'd say 350-400 of them were throwing snowballs. All of a sudden this RCMP walks through the crowd to the middle and randomly asks two random guys for their passes. They don't give them to him, so he goes to arrest them. So they hand over their passes and then he gets to where everyone can see him, waves their passes through the air, and says the next person to throw another snowball will have their passes clipped too. He then got a pretty big BOOO and "fuck the police" before he left. The snowball fight ended, and so did the respect most people had for the shitty RCMP.
that is fucking ridiculous!!!! You can't get your pass clipped for throwing snowballs, what the hell are you doing wrong that infringes the law?? I would honestly have thrown a ball in that guy's head.
I believe intrawest still has to call them up/allow them on the mountain in the first place. Unless W/B is consired part of the municipality/gov't land - although run by intrawest, still governed by the appropriate body?
I am guessing that some, if not almost all of you were not around last year when that snowball fight turned ugly at peak chair.
Since that time, and the negative light it shone on WB I am sure they do not want a repeat incident. As far as telling the cops off, or throwing a snowball at them, that is a SUREFIRE way of getting yourself arrested, and if you read the fine print when you sign your waivers.. you will probably notice a line about how disorderly conduct/illegal activity on the mountain/property will result in a revokation without reimbursement of your pass.
The snowball fights at the alpine chairs is getting old.
We all want to get up there, and we all want to shred fresh pow, but we also all want to get back home safe at the end of the day too. So Patrol will do whatever it takes to prevent another lady from getting her leg broken by an INBOUNDS avalanche (like what happened in West Bowl last month).. and this will even include NOT opening the alpine chairs.
Dude the ski school got absolutely pounded on saturday, its always the new instructors who try and get a big tip by cutting the line as soon as it opens and get their clients first chair.
Was that the one that started when some dumbass twinkie brought a bunch of kids to cut through the Peak chair lineup on a huge powder day? The one I read about in Skier?
That snowball fight provided more positive press for W/B than the shitty news releases they put out every time it snows more than 2 cm.
^ Yeah, but it wasn't kids, it was adults, and some lady got one in the back of the head. She wrote a letter to the Pique about her terrible vacation in Whistler, and the event got national publicity.
I've had a few playfull snowball fights in Pique chair line up this year. As long as no one gets nasty and everyone is having a good time there shouldn't be a problem.
Oh yes, and thank you WB for not updating the snow phone or the online snow report this morning. (It still said 1 cm overnight from Tuesday morning.) I like to think that because of that I was 5th chair up Peak this morning and first down Shale Slope.
we all appreciate what the patrol do for us. we dont want to have any avalanches hurt anybody, EVER. Thats why we all wait semi-patiently and justly to let them finish and then get some fresh tracks on the mountain we pay good money to ski at. When someone decides to budge in the line, thats when a bad decision is made. what does that say to the people who have waited for an hour? "fuck you, we dont care about you. these people are here for one day and dont put nearly as much money into the resort as you do but we dont care" ...? thats what it sounds like to me
Best idea I ever had was to throw a snowball at two cops during a new years eve party in the village a couple years ago. I was hammered and threw it right between the two of them. They turned around to see who it was, and I promptly hid my face, but my buddy standing beside me got picked up and they wouldn't give him his ID back until he told them who did it. He didn't tell, and almost got thrown in jail... Cops and snowballs don't mix, it's simple ski math.
No, you are completely right.
That is EXACTLY what it says to everyone standing in line.
That is a HUGE problem, but it is not one that will EVER be solved by a snowball fight.
I have been there myself, I have been here long enough to have had it happen to me on more than just a couple of occasions.
I know it probably won't make you feel any better at that moment, but very loudly inquire of the ski/snowboard instructors name, or look at it on his Name tag. Then inform him and the lifties that you are going to send a nice complaint to Doug Forsythe.
If this does not make the person rethink his decision he is not very smart.
If it is patrol or mountain safety cutting the line, you will have to accept it. They are doing their job (although I have some real questions as to why the hell mountain safety personnel are allowed up the lift to make laps prior to customers... as there are no "slow down" signs for them to stand by in the peak... I think I am gonna have to look into that myself as I have had to wait while they are going up on far too many occasions now)
Anyways.. I got away from my point... I know that throwing a snowball (or five hundred snowballs) at the offending individual makes you feel instantly better at the moment, but it solves nothing and can quite possibly injure someone.
Its a very strongly believed rule about ski school cutting lines on pow days. The mtn is very aware of this yet nothing has been done to avent this. I (having ski school line access with the Freeride CLub) have used these lines on pow days many times, but NEVER and I repeat NEVER WHILE THE LIFTLINE IS WAITING FOR IT TO OPEN. Last Saturday I went to Crystal to wait for it to open, and yes even though my kids wanted to jump in the ski school line, I made them wait with everyone else. Next thing you know it opens and 3 FUCKIN twinkies roll out of the line and up to the SS line up. I was FURIOUS! Then the same twinkie did it at Glacier Chair in the afternoon.
I think that if this ever happens to you on a pow day, I encourage you to speak your mind.
If they ask to cut in front right when the lift opens, say no, and tell them to wait with the rest of the lineup. They can cut lines all day, they SHOULD NOT be allowed to do it when the lift opens.
Please speak you mind on this subject, it needs to be voiced by the public more.
Oh yeah, Im still gonna chuck snowballs at the poachers...just more dicreetly.
Ya Ryan, you know it and I know it and all the people who have worked ski school for more than one season seem to get it..
I can't understand though for the life of me why lift operations does NOT follow the guidlines on this and NOT allow twinkies to cut to the front at first chair?.
And yet, when those instructors whose responsibility to know better do it anyway, it wouldn't hurt if the lifties didn't roll over. At least tell them they're doing something wrong...
Erica, you can't be serious to say that a liftie has no authority or responsibility in this.
Lifties themselves are the ones who let you on the chair (granted it is only after approval, but they still actually open the line). It stands to reason then that lifties also being aware of this policy SHOULD "remind" the instructors of said policy when an instructor attempts to circumvent the line for first chair on a Powder day. All the liftie has to do is say "excuse me, but I have to let the line up first."
you're right, the lifties should do something, but then a lot of lifties are just foreigners there for the season that don't know better than the instructors... But yeah these instructors need their din to be lowered when they aren't looking, so that they crash and tumble down whistler bowl.
if I get hit in the side of the head and the snow tunnels its way far into my ear canal, I smile because I know someone probably saw it and got a kick out of it. good for them I'd get a kick out of it too. I know this is only applies to me and not old women, but going as far as to say that a snowball will injur you?.. come on don't be a pussy.
Instructors cutting in line for powder days is crap! It's just the most selfish thing they can do. I used to teach at Blackcomb and sure you figure you'll get better tips if you get your class up 1st, but still... It just ain't cool. I dunno what I'd do if they tried to cut in front of me, I'd lose it... haha
1. what is a twinkie? (i'm assuming it is a canadian term)
2. what is up with whistler and snowball fights? i have never seen one in my 18 or so years of skiing in the states... canadians always seem so chill, so i just don't get it.
snow ball fights are fun, most skischolars deserve it, and lifty's aren't responsible for what goes on in the maze... they have more to worry about, like lineing up ducks, and sobering up.
was any one in line first thing last wednesday?.. did you see me tumble?? haha
Intrawest is starting to listen to your complaints about ski instructors jumping line-ups in the mornings and when the alpine lifts open. There is now a 20cm rule in place regarding morning sessions (when all the instructors go up at 8am, before lift opens at 8.15) and if instructors want to go up on big powder days they have to get in the line-up.
With the opening of alpine lifts instructors are STRONGLY encouraged to leave at least 15 minutes before using the Ski School line on lifts which are just opening. Although you might find it frustrating that classes do jump the lines it is what the clients pay for and so a concrete rule would be unfair to those paying more. A private lesson for a day is $600, surely paying this much entitles you to jump the queue and get the best snow?!
Realistically both the mountains are huge. If you know where to go you can find fresh for the whole day. I skied Ladies First today and there was one set of tracks down it before I ripped it up. OK it wasn't particularly fresh, more windblown and a bit crusty but it was untouched. Take your skis off and hike.
the only fuckers who pay a shitload of meony to get up the mountain first who I'm ok with jumping the line are the founders pass holders. 50 gs a year yo. Because they most likely are rich local dudes who run shit.. Not these London Bankers who come and pay 600$ a day.. fuckthem, they can wait or go heli-skiing.
Last year a cop told us to stop throwing snowballs int he harmony line up. So I went ahead and nuked him in the back of the head when he turned around (amazing). Then after that the whole crowd turned on him. when getting on the chair i asked him how his day was. reply- "I wish i had my gun with me"
