Road Trip to Alaska

I will be taking a road trip to Alaska later in roughly one month with two of my friends. We live in Rapid City, SD, and our destination is Juneau...has anyone ever driven the Alaskan Highway, and how are the roads in norther BC, the Yukon, etc? I know that it will be cold and snowy, and we're prepared for that. Any info on the roads or conditions would be helpful. Thanks!

have fun the highways arn't the best and can be dangerious so be careful i would contact the highway department in BC and talk to them about it

Yeah, read 'into the wild' by Jon Krakauer. Story of Chris McCandless, great book, truly inspiring story! Good luck! Watch for bears! Make sure you read that book though!

unless you trake a ferry oe somethin, and even then i dont know how you would get to juneau cause there are no raods into juneau... good luck though, sounds like it would be cool

We have the ferry planned out, it takes across to the island that Juneau is located on. Yes, we're aware that it will be damn cold, not to worry though, we've got our bases covered. I have an expedition worthy sleeping bag, and we'll have two stoves, tons of Ramen, and an extra 10 gallon tank of gasoline. I think we're set, so has anyone else ever done this?

yea, i live up here in Alaska. i've driven the highway a few times with my family...not too bad. the cold isn't too bad, it's been really warm up here this year. just make sure your car is in good working order. good luck man!

Is it true that the Alaskan Highway is the biggest piece of shit stretch of road in North America? I've heard terrible stories about it...huge fucking potholes, etc. Any info?

potholes arn't too bad along most of it. maybe here and there, but not the whole thing. the best part is all of the perma frost that causes these big ups and downs in the road...kinda feels like a roller coaster if you're going fast

yah i live up here in ak too. why you going to juneau bro? come up to anchorage and then drive over to Turnagin pass or go over ot Valdez or cordova thats where its at. personally i've never skied it but i have heard heavenly things about it. with the permafrost bring like a drill or sumtin to drill the ground if you want i don't know how well it would work. but yah the ground is pretty damn hard. and my fellow alaskan is right about the roads and the roller coaster effect. good luck bro have fun.

Well, for this trip we won't be skiing. It is just a long ass road trip, and we only have 10 days to complete it. That's 4500 miles in 10 days. We'll be strapped for time as it is, so we won't be coming as far as Anchorage this time. A return trip will most likely be necessary though!
