Im so damn tired of everyone bitching about how skiing needs to be in the olympics and the need for the sport of skiing to expand and attract new money and new people. And I simply feel I should ask the question, Why the fuck do we want to do this? Im completely quoting exactly what i said in another thread but I dont really I feel this deserves its own thread. Why do we want to expand and get bigger. The athletes may get richer, but the best ones are already loaded and if they get too rich, they lose touch with the rest of hte sport. Do pro football connect with fans liek pro skiers do? Would an olympic B-ball player log onto a b-ball website and post shit on a forum? I seriously doubt it. Is our reason for expansion to reach out to new people? Why the fuck are we reaching out. People who want to/love to ski come to skiing, thats how its always been. You need to pursue skiing and put in alot of money and effort to participate, which to a certain extend weeds out the people who dont love the sport as much as we do. And besides why do we want no people. Do we want to be like snowboarding which is the "cool thing to do" and have every mountain packed with little bastards who cant do shit, have no respect for anything, and cant stop thinking about how good their bad lieutenant helmet looks? to quote myself from another thread. If someone asked you what you do and you siad i play soccer, everyone would be lke sweet, so does everyone else, but if you were to say, i freeski, they would be like what the fuck? We are unique and unlike anything else and thats what makes this so cool. Expansion would ruin that. Take a look at the history of other sports like skiing. Surfing, skating, snowboarding, expansion always leads to the overcommercialization of the sport and a complete loss of the "core" aspect that used to accompany those sports. Do you think skating was cooler back in the dogtown days or now when everyone does it? Im not saying we should cut ourselves off and stop trying to bring in new kids and people, but this whole mentality of "we gotta grow, we gotta get big and show the world what we do" is ridiculous.
I at no point said we should in any way try to control or direct the expansion of skiing, all i said was we should stop complaining about it and think about what we are promoting
I wasn't saying that. I was making a general comment that you as a person should not let your emotions be influenced over factors (in this case other people wanting change). It is a fundamental buddhist principle, and once you learn to accept change and life as it is, you will have a much happier life and experience. I just thought you could benefit from thinking about that.
and waht about the people who do actually like the sport but are too damn broke to be able to put in "so much money" that you said...i cant fucking afford $400 or even $300's worth of shit. im lucky enough that i get by to just here and there pay for lift tickets. im stoked as shit that k2 had those first pair of fujatives selling for 200 bucks, now htey might be beat to shit right now, but i dont have the money to pay for a whole new ski setup. its just too expensive. and even now when someone tells me the surf or skate or board or whatever, thats cool that they do it man, who the hell gives a shit that they arent good at it? arent so many people claiming that all they do skiing for is fun? whats wrong with these so called "posers" then? dont they do it for fun too? is there some kind of right of passage a person has to walk before they have legitimacy in your book?
i wasnt implying that u have to be good to ski, i was saying that we do it for the fun of it not to be cool (...like say posers...) And no matter what, ski gear is always going to be expensive, its made of expensive materials and is extremely complex to assemble. Sure you may save some money, but no matter what you are going to be paying a couple hundred dollars for your skis. Normal skiing is ridiculously mainstream as a recreational sport and companies like rossi sell millions of skis a year, yet even the cheapest skis are still a couple hundred dollars. If u expect that if freeskiing was more popular skis would rain from the skies, ur sadly mistaken
I have no general comment on this because I do not care if freeskiing is in the olympics, I dont think there should be snowboarding and there probably shouldnt be figure skating or mogul skiing... the olympics were always traditional sports, who can do what in what time, all of these subjective sports being drawn into the olypics detraditionalizes things and just makes the olympics mainstream... which leads to being washed up IMO
anywho... quit bitching about people bitching, people will bitch, you proved that
i only read the first two lines of what you wrote and i'm jumping to the conclusion that you're an idiot, the only thing more exposure (olympics) more money (olympics) will do for skiing is make it more acceptable to the general population, and part of the world that dont know about skiing can be excited by something new, just as the day you first saw a skier and said damn that looks fun, grow up spread the love of skiing, fuck everyone who hates
man you just got a straight fucked up outloook on skiing bro, i finally read all of what you wrote, pro skiers dont make much, the ones who make the most make the most competing, which would definatly not drive them away from the mainstream. dawg you gotta love skiing not think about it, you are way too cought up in whats "cool" basketball? soccer? football? those dont even relate to skiing so dont compare them. i hate people like you
