Elan and Marker Introduce Free-Flexing Fusion
Begunje, Slovenia (Ski Press)-In one of the most innovative interpretations of ski-binding systems yet, Elan Skis unveils its new Fusion Integration Technology.
Built in cooperation with Marker, the “Intraglide” Fusion system is billed as the first integrated suspension system. It’s a tough claim to dispute given that the binding actually attaches inside the ski to a plate molded into the core at production.
“It not only allows the ski to flex naturally, it gives you quicker transmission to the edge because the binding is actually integrated into the ski’s construction,” said Mike Curtis, Elan USA product manager.
The plate glides freely in the center of the ski so there are no hinge points where the binding can freeze the ski’s flex – a feature enhanced by the fact the entire binding housing is secured to one single point on the plate system.
Elan engineers developed the concept then built the system in conjunction with Marker. Not only does the system introduce a new concept in design in the ski-binding technology race that’s become the story in skiing – it also introduces a new technology milestone for Elan.
“Let’s not forget that Elan is a company that helped pioneer cap construction and the shape ski revolution,” said Curtis, referring to Elan high water marks like its monoblock construction and SCX parabolic shape technology. “There’s some real technical innovation associated with this brand.”
Elan is the company that was under the feet of Ingemar Stenmark when he won 86 World Cup victories, and Davo Karnicar, the first man to Ski Everest, who made his descent on a custom mountaineering design.
Stenmark, in fact, was on hand when Elan introduced the technology to a select group of dealers and international media in Slovenia. In Elan green hotels, and Elan green buses, the entourage were led in the dark into ancient caves where bright flashing lights and a mind-blowing scene of underground rock bands, illuminated subterranean streams and accent lighted skis suddenly greeted them.
Elan brings the Fusion to market next year in the S-Series, including the Fusion S12 and S8, both with dimensions of 112/67/100 for high-end and intermediate alpine carving. The M-Series, 12 and 8, both with 108/70/98 dimensions, is for all-mountain on and off-piste conditions.
“One of the really cool things we’ve been noticing in all our tests is how much the integrated binding increases your edge contact just because you can pressure the shovel of the ski so much earlier in the turn,” said Curtis. “We’re really excited about this design.” (© 2003 Ski Press Media, Inc).
