i remember the first time i came to this site i was just searching the internet for ski related video clips. when i came here, let me tell you, it was nothing to special, and i ended up going elsewhere to like sasfilms and skiingmotion. the thing that pulled me back were all the changes that i saw when i stumbled back here, and the forums and stuff that helped me keep in touch with all the ski related stuff. now, after all this time the site is much more complete but seems to be losing some of its core feel. i guess its just a catch 22 with more and more people gravitating here. Thanks to all of you that put time into the site like NoPoles and such. I guess there's not much point to this thread, but i just felt like rambling on. and others remember this site back in the old days?

Losing it's core feeling...
Man... I"ll tell you we fight with this issue all the time. It's really hard to define what it is that makes something core, or if it really even makes sense..
We really do try to keep the core feeling going, but it does become difficult with the problem of supporting this site as a growing business. I mean, we have staff now, and thousands of members, and tonnes of tech shit to take care of.
What makes it core, and what has been lost in your opinion?

its strange, i just sat here trying to define what i thought core was. i dont know if i could pin it down to a single definition but i'll try in a few sentences.
when i originally started skiing, it was just about the fun of it, you know just the pure enjoyment of getting up there and making turns. it seems like a bunch of people (not all) on this site are here just people wanting recognition for what tricks they can pull out. in my opinion core reflects the primary reason that you ski. it shouldn't be about showing up people.
on a somewhat different note,
i dont know if the core part of skiing can be merged with the large industry of it. we now have people that are striving so hard to fit the image of a newschool skier and not concentrating on progressing, doing their own thing and not worrying about what others think.
i'll give you an example of how big business clashes with the core feel. my home mountain is bridger bowl which has been a pretty core place to ski i believe. there has always been a good local feel to the place, but recently they have been starting plans for condos and expansions and things that will make it a larger place to ski, and maybe more attractive to outside business, but it will kill the feel of the resort. people are more relaxed up there and the locals are not overshadowed by tourists with deep pockets. not to mention that ticket prices are going to skyrocket. i can remember just a few years ago when it was $30 to ski a full day there... now its $39.
back to the site... i don't think its your fault that newschoolers is being filled with very impressionable kids that follow the big industry. i applaud you guys for what you have done to keep up a site that so many come to. its not that newschoolers is squashing the core feeling, its just becoming less important to keep the core feeling to the people that flood this site. they probably were never influenced by the people that started this great sport.
between kids growing up watching tv 24/7 and becoming lazy the core feeling is slowly being drown out.
keep in mind this is just my opinion and others are allowed to disagree.
I'm curious on how you would define core Mr. Bishop if you would.

The one thing that I think makes a site core, is if members have a say on what happens to the site.

i want to one day visit the newschoolers compound
i hear of majestic mountains right in the back yard, and females drinking champaigne *sp* and skiing switch naked.
i heard everyone gets their own personal blowjob on there way up newschoolers own personal gondola.

Whoa... man let me tell you this is something that keeps me awake sweating at night.
How to define core?
Part of me thinks that core is a silly concept that is simply created by a teenage desire to hate "the man"
The other part of me feels that core is simply the act of believing in something, and staying true to your own personal angle of beliefs on the issue.
I believe that trying to keep core is to simply express feelings from the heart, and show the side of skiing that I see, not what our sponsers want us to say.
But I don't want to piss off the sponsors....
I'll tell you, it makes me crazy to think about this shit.

this is why he runs the site...he is the man (but not "the man" )

lol... yeah it can be true.
I was way too into keeping it true business... then there was a thread where someone called me out for being too wishy-washy on all the issues.
I try really hard to speak the truth and tell it how I see it.

an interesting note on that point from someone who lives in whistler, you're all core, then all the condos and big business move in, then you're played, but after a year or two of tourists roaming around, you're core again for being a local.

i agree with 540 he is totally right. Everything is losing its core. Thats why i don't even ski resorts anymore, i am so over it. And it doesn't even matter what youpost in the pics people shred you, its not about what you think is cool, its all about what the mass of people think, its really annoying. And its definitely getting worse here but thats something we have to live with.
To mr bishop.
I beleive core is a combination of what you said. It begins as the first just doing what you beleif and not straying from that, but in the meanwhille the man is DEFINITELY getting stuck. well in my world anywayy

When I first started here, it was a smaller group of people, and it did seem more like a family and community. I think that was one of the things that really gave it the 'core feel' for me. I had alot of respect for most members, and still do today though. But I guess as the site grows, inevitably, so grows the idiocy.
BUT. We are still a strong community. It's easy to forget when you see all the trash-talking in the forums, but on serious issues, we unite. When C.R. Johnson went down, every single member came together. It was phenomenal to see how many people took inititiave to get things done. Thousands of people left messages to get well soon, wished him a fast recovery, and had him in their prayers.
People sent cards/gifts/letters to cr, kye, cr's family, and his friends. NS members who knew him and lived nearby, took letters for us and dropped them off at the hospital for him. NS members stood up and did whatever they could to help, and that was nothing less than amazing.
