Big Mountain/Powder Skis

Okay, so there's been a bit of controversy. I'm trying to figure out what to get but am having some trouble with my options, hoped some of you might be able to help me out.

I want a ski, preferably a twin tip that is fat and aimed at big mountain or powder skiing. I like the skogen so something similar to that in performance would be good. I like about a 180cm+, I'm 6'2 and about 80kgs. I like big mountain skiing with big mountain and backcountry new school. I have skogens for the park and pipe so I don't care about that. It's all about real skiing this time.

So according to some threads I've read, the Motherships are too soft, the Scratch BC's break and the Pocket Rockets just plain suck. Well what's the real deal from people who know? Bring it on.

You gotta' go demo stuff. I realize it's hard for you, living on the other side of the world and all, but really that's the best way. Look at the K2 AK Enemy. I have thier AK Launcher, and it's sweet in pow, and I've skied the Enemies and they are nice as well. I would think the combo of the two couldn't be bad since the originals are solid skis.

Why is it hard for me to demo skis being on the other side of the world? I've probably skied more different twin tips than you have. No offence dude, sorry, but yes, I do plan to demo them all before I buy, that's what I usually tell people too, I'm merely curious as to what everyone else thinks.

Don't Listen to skierdood... the seth pistols are not what you want if you think the the motherships are too soft and the pocket rockets suck. The Seth Pistols are one of the softest skis on the market. Also, being 6'2 also, i realize that 179 is TOO short. I think that Rossi took car of the breakage problemo with the BC scratch, just make sure to get the ones with the rubbery topsheet. If i were you, i'd go for the 188... the 182 is good, but hey for REAL skiing a 188 would fair better. Also, compare the lengths in the shop... they are soo close in size. My other recomendation would be the AK Enemy, thats what Szocs skiied on all last year, in the park and everything, it's a sick ski and the only negative part of it is the rather small rear twin, and it's graphix. Of course, demo them first. Also, although Atomic make sick Skis, The Stomp, Sugar Daddy and Big Daddy all have a binding plate... meaning that you'd have to get the super-duper ultra heavy bindings. One More thing... the Jeremy Nobis Pro Model from Dynastar is supposed to be really good... But i was talking to a rider from them and he says the the 194 is different, and much better than the 188 and 180... which is a bit of a problem if thats longer than you want. Anyway... this post is too long and nobody is even guna bother reading it so... i give up.

Oh son, you did not. Whistlermann, you pretty much just asked for it in your last post, so here it comes.
The Seth Pistols, in extreme opposition to your statement, are NOT the softest ski on the market. Do you know what K2 does to construct that ski? The tip and the tail are extremely soft, but what part of the ski is it again that all the carving energy comes from? The waist! And K2 uses the 'Torsion Box' construction on the Seth Pistols, which means that the waist of the ski and the area where the binding contacts the ski is stiff. This stifness allows for the ski to hold an edge well on groomed slopes, while the softness of the tip and tail allows for excellent skiing in softer snow. The 'Torsion Box,' in essence, gives the ski the control that it needs in order to perform well in varied conditions.
Besides that, the sidecut of the ski allows for a rather substantial turning radius, which allows you to really open the ski up for BIG turns at HIGH speeds. That's where this ski is at home.
Last, but not least, the length of the ski. As skierdood86 stated earlier, this ski rides similar to the 185cm Pocket Rocket. TRUE! I rode the 185cm Pockets last year. And, believe it or not, the 179cm Seth Pistol is actually the same size as the 181cm 1080. Why? Because K2 measures the HEIGHT of the ski from the ground to the tip, and Salomon measures the running length of the ski, thus decreasing the actual length of the ski when you factor in the loss of length from the tip and tail.
Overall, this ski DOES perform. I was skeptical at first as well, but now I'm all about the Seth Pistols. They come in a 189cm length as well, that might suit you Tim. Good luck!

dynastar intuitive inspired by jeremy nobis... demoed them in jackson for a week cus i broke my skogens, sickest skis for plain riding, were SICK for big mtn, and were still very nice in bumbs and held a very good edge. these skis are sooo sick i almost baught a pair. they ride smooth through anyhting. they were fine in the park too

Intuitiv Jeremy Nobis Inspired. This is the fat twintip. The 194 could differ from 188, 178 and 168, like it was with Dynastar Arno Adam Pro (the one with really cool surfing graphix) - 'cause the 194 is the real limited edition 'pro' skis, and smaller sizes just use the same graphix.

Also, there is a Intuitiv BIG, which is the same ski as Nobis, but the graphix differs (I believe, the BIG's one is much cooler - blue dragon on tip).

Little Big Fat is the ski which is positioned by Dynastar as backcountry freestyle ski. This ski as fat as Nobis and BIG, but it's tail is little bit more narrow - it should make the ski more forgivin'.

If you wanna stiff freeride ski, try the Fischer BigStix 84. I wouldn't call it freestyle ski anyway.

Or Nordica Beast 96 TT. Or Kneissl Flexon T@nker. Or Atomic Stomp.

Wanna real fat ski? Try Fischer BigStix 106, Atomic Sugar Daddy, or even Atomic Big Daddy. The Big Daddy is so big, that snowboarders could use it for downhill :)

And the latest one, the next season ski: Volkl Budda Gotama. The sick design! Completely black twintipped ski with 105 waist.

yeah dude the 189 pistols are your best bet, they ride so well, in everything, not even a bad pipe ski. but they are amazing in soft pow, theres nothing whatsoever that can beat them. the bc is to center mounted and the pocket rockets do just plain suck. mo'ships are pretty good, but the seth pistol is your best bet.

How big is the read tip on the Seth Pistol? I'm kinda after something with a fairly significant tail. I demoed the Pocket Rocket (02) this last season in a 180 and 185 I think it was, hated them.

Does the Mothership ride anything like the Skogen? Coz if it does then I'll love it. Maybe in a 192 or something??

And does anyone ride the Scratchs at 188 or longer? How do they handle?

I think it will probably come down to either the Mothership (192) or the Scratch BC at a similar length.

Either that or I'll just go and get an X-Scream or a Intuitiv or something.

i think the seth pistols or the moships would be your best bet. sp's do have an enourmous tail on them...but if you love the skogens you should really like the moships..so its really a toss up.

Tim, my most sincere apology for assuming skis would be less available in New Zealand. I guess I was thinking that since in my mind it's not a skiing mecca down there, stuff wouldn't be as accessible.

I have the BC's and they are awsome, everything you could ask for. I guess my skiing style is similar to yours, i like big mountain and backcountry jibbing. The BC is perfect for that type of stuff, also they are good in the park occasionally too. I love the ski, im kinda biased tho.

Honestly, i dont like the motherships as much as the BC's, but they are nice skis. Just my 2 cents though, i really like the mother ships but the BC's are better in my opinion. But its your opinion that matter, i would demo them first though.

This years mo ships are better torsionally. There stiffer that way. I would agree for the mo ships. If you like the skogens alot...you'll love the mo ships.

you should consider the 180 or 190cm v-pro. a totally beefy ski that can handle anything,is pretty fat, but can still rip on ice, chunks, crud, etc. nice tall tail on it also. If you want to haul arse and are a powerful skier, it is a good choice.

Best pipe ski I've tried and it is very good in the park and on rails. anyways, all I've said is my opinion and not hype.(I have 170 and 180cm v-pros that have 40+ days on each pair)

Why do you think the pocket rockets suck? If I were you, I would get the pocket rockets, scratch BC, OR, if you're REALLY serious about big mountain/powder and nothing else, the Salomon AK Rocket Pilot are awesome.

I skied about 2 hours on the pocket rockets as a demo ski and they sucked. I just couldn't get them to do what I wanted or get them to respond at speed. I found them chunky, big, clumsy and useless in the pipe. I just didn't really like them but I have friends who love them, they ski a bit differently though, everyone's styles are different and different skis accomodate that I guess.

How do the motherships and Scratch BC's handle on ice?

And yeah, I will look into the Volkl V-pro's, thanks bro.

hey shmuck, zip it. i agree with tim on the fact that pocket rockets suck. they are too soft, don't respond, and break really easy. on the other hand, moships are waaaay better. they are stiffer, handle better on ice and have a WOOD core. not a pussy foam core. and tim, the new 03 moships would be a much better bet to go with.

I agree, pocket rockets do suck.. hard. The BC's handle pretty good on ice (in my opinion). Like i said before, the mother ships are big, but i just didnt feel like i had as much control on them as i did on my BC's.

I put the p12s on my skogans tim and they rule..probably a better choice then the pivogy binding since it's getting a lot of sketchy reviews. Definitly give the volkl explosive a go though, volkls are sweet skis... they're really stiff if you like that sort of thing. The G4s are probably the best backcountry ski i've ever ridden. They have a bit of a twin on them...not sure if it's enough to feel safe landing switch in pow though.

Well Schmuck, you can't be a very good seller of skis if all you do is abuse potential customers. What do you care if I think the Pocket Rockets suck serious ass? What's it to you? They do suck, sure some people like them but for the way I ski and the snow I ski on they blew some major dick. So if all you're going to do is abuse people for their choice of skiing and their skiing style then why don't you just butt out. I couldn't give two shits if you think the Motherships suck and the Pocketrockets rule. I'm asking for advice from people who ski like me.

hahahaha, wow, that was stupid. Especially seeing as how I think the Pocket Rockets suck ass for big mountain as well. The reason I was saying you shouldnt even bother trying the Motherships if you thought the Pocket Rockets sucked is because they're similar. What gave you the impression I meant otherwise? I guess it's true what they say: assumption is the mother of all fuck ups.

And as far as 'abusing potential customers' goes, you're not a potential customer, and I dont sell skis over the internet. But thanks for comin out.

wow internet bashing...i can feel the heat..wait no i can't. Just a question...if the Mo ship 192cm isn't a big mountian ski then what the hell is it? A fat ass park ski? I have come to the conclusion also that if you LOVE skogens you will LOVE soft powder skis. The the pocket's or mo ships. Just buy the ones you can get a better price on, then take the extra cash and get a meal at Mc'Dicks. Hey and maybe treat a freind too!

schmuck, shut up. give tim some real info.

I've skied the motherships (although as a tele setup) and they are solid skis with a good feel to them, not as noodly as the PRs. I think that the motherships wood core is what makes them so versatile, they ski everything pretty well except for super hard pack and ice, and aren't as soft as the PRs though they are still on the softer end of the spectrum.

I skied the 01/02 motherships and I've heard that the 02/03 ones are a bit stiffer. Considering the fact that skogens are soft (compared to v-pro and others), motherships probably wouldn't be too soft for you, tim. Also, the motherships aren't as heavy as the v-explosive so they are by no means tanks. More like cadillacs that can cruise over nearly anything at moderate speed.

oh, and the huge tail rules for landing switch in pow, though not on tele ;P

Here's the scoop:

Ya'll can argue, I'll try to give the best facts that I've gathered both selling those skis and demoing them myself.

Moships:
Great in the pow, not as great on the pack. Plenty light for park/pipe work, but not made for that stuff. They want BC kickers and pow.

Pistols:
Similar to the moships, but softer. That means even better in deep snow, even worse on hard snow.

Skratch BC:
If they hold together, they ski very well wherever you want to take them. However, I've seen even some of the 'improved' models come back broken.

Pocket Rocket:
You either love it or hate it. No in-between. More than any other ski, demo it if you can.

Dynastar Intuitiv (Nobis):
Stable as all hell but still fairly quick edge to edge. Don't really want to spend more than 20% of the day on groomed, your legs will be jelly.

Kneissel Flexon Tanker:
Stiff, long, and wide. I didn't like it at all except straight-lining pow.


I really think the ski you're looking for is the Nordica Beast 96. It's very good all over, and REALLY REALLY good in the pow. Best powder ski I've skiied, ever.

If you like the ride of the skogs, though, get the moships. All Lines ride alike, and loving the skogs will mean you'll love the moships.

Hmm thanks. You see the thing is that I don't get a lot of pow here, It's usually like boot deep sorta heavy pow in most places that I ride or fairly soft pack snow in the backcountry. At the most we'll have a couple days a year of thigh to waist deep pow out back and that's great. That's what I want the big boards for. I just want something that will handle well on the groom but will specialise in the backcountry for going really quick, maybe doing tele and keeping it real on big slopes. Are the Moships good for steeps also?

Massive amounts of speed in really heavy snow WILL overpower the moship. The tip got a little free/floppy when I got to mach speed on 'em in dense snow.

If you can do without a twin and you are a strong skier, look at the Volkl Vertigo G4. It's basically their GS ski made a lot (83mm) wider with a little (and I do mean a LITTLE) softer tip for easier turn initiation and better float. After hearing more of what your snow conditions are like, you need a good strong (not soft) ski to get through that heavy snow. The G4 will be that and then some. It rips the groomers, destroys crud and heavy snow, and handles like nobody's business in deep snow. But you need to be strong. I'm 6'4' and 200, a 13-year veteran of 2-planking, and it's plenty of ski for me, I would definitely NOT go too long in it.

Umm, the V-explosive are great skis, but if you are planning on doing backcountry jibbing on them i would not get em. They have a pretty low tail, you can land some stuff backwards in the park when theres no powder, but with any powder the tail sucks though. It is a really really good ski though, just not good at big mountain.

That's the thing aye, like New Zealand is fairly well known for not having huge amounts of pow, usually just a lot of hard to soft pack and boot deep kinda stuff and fairly icy conditions. I've ripped the skogens on pretty much everything and they've eaten up anything I can chuck at them. I'm 6'2, probably about 180lbs and have been skiing for 16 years, ex-national GS team so know what mach speed is like on skis. I've found the skogens just a little short for tanking it on harder snow but they have handled very very well. A lot better than I've expected and they're great in the park. So now I want something a bit longer, a bit wider and a bit bigger. I was looking at the darkside but don't like the new ones and the 02 ones are hard to find over here. The mothership looks perfect. I don't mind the softness of the skogen, actually I quite like it, so if the motherships ski like a much longer, bigger skogen then I should love them. But yeah, demos will tell.

And yeah I have tried the Bandit XX and XXX. I tried the XX on a pretty good day for about 2 hours or so. I wasn't all that impressed with them but then I have never really liked Rossi skis that much, not even their GS ones. The XXX was an interesting board to ride, it was pretty stable and held good speed, I did quite like it but decided it wasn't really for me.

G4's are very sweet, Beta Ride EX are sweet, PR's are very sweet contrary to popular beleif. Depends on if you want a soft ski, stiff....whether you make large GS type of turns or tighter slalom type turns (in and out of powder). I didn't go through all 46 postings...but hope my 2cents helps. PR's if you like shorter turns...softer ski. G4's if you like stiffer wider turns......same with Beta REX. Nordica Beast are titties as well. Skied them all, PR's take my cake....185.
