Snowboarder looking to start skiing

I've been getting bored of snowboarding lately/loosing intrust so I want to take up skiing, but need some expert help to get started since I haven't skied in 5-6 years.
First off, what size should I look at? I'm 6'3" 225 lbs.
What kind of skis should I look at?
Im on the east coast and am looking for a ski that's all mountain, definatly not just park. My friend has PE's and I think they're a good choice since I always hear good things about them.
If I want to find the best deal/lowest price, what's prime time to buy? I know right now prices are not gonna be great, but what time in the off season is good for getting cheap or good deals, and should I go for this years models or wait till the 07's come out?
Boot/binding wise, what's the diference in quality? Is it worth it to get a high end pair of boots and bindings or is there not much diference between them?
I'll probly get on skis a few times this year to practice, but waiting till next year to buy skis is not a problem. Anything else that's worth mentioning, please do.
Thanks

If your friend knows his stuff, have him take you to a shop. Figure out what boots would be good for you, what size poles, and etc... Then buy online over the summer for the best prices. Spring time too.

yeah, the BEST deals are to buy last years stuff in the summer. So this summer you'll be able to get real good deals on all the 05/06 gear. Yes there is a difference between expensive/cheap boots and bindings. Get whatever boots feel the most comfortable, and you'll need some good bindings since you are a pretty big guy.

boots are the most important thing you can buy. get a nice pair. it will make all the difference. then bindings, gotta be safe right? then skis. clothing/poles dont really matter, and i assume you have that anyway, being a boarder.
a quick rundown:
boots>bindings>skis>everything else.

yeah you're a big guy, but for starting out you won't want a super huge ski. i think a 179 public enemy or a 181 ar5 would be a good choice for you since they're good for all mountain and park.
if you can find a good price on this years stuff i would recommend that you just go ahead and buy it now instead of waiting until next year. for bindings i would look on ebay and try to find a pair of look p12s for under $150, and as far as boots go, see what fits you in a shop and look for a deal online. 1080s or xwaves are pretty decent all around boots that usually feet the majority of peoples feet. poles don't matter.
glad to hear you're converting. good luck with it.

for bindings try to find some look p12s or p12 jibs. for boots DO NOT BUY WITHOUT TRYING ON. different companies have different fits. you need to try boots on at a store before you buy

yeah, i don't know about used, you'd have to get more info on the wear and tear (and smell) of them before you commit to used boots, but you should deffinitely check out evogear.com, they have sick deals, especially on last years stuff, they have P12 Jibs for around 160 i think, so check them out.

It's ther fit of used boots that's the problem . Only buy them if you've tried them on and fit like a glove. Go to a ski store and try on as many different boots as possible to find your ideal fit.
They make a huge difference.

I would look around now for some skis, there are some killer deals where I live...$199 for this years PE's. Although I realize this is super cheap and not every where will have it

If you don't want to buy a new pair of nice skis, go for last seasons good skis.
As far as poles, you dont need 100 dollar poles, cheap race poles will work more than well.
But make sure you get good bindings, and more importantly boots.

i used to have 52 inchers, but when i got the joysticks i decided to go down a little. long poles really do suck in the park..

Just thought of another thing, how should I mount the bindings? I searched around and heard 2-3 back from center mounting was good, but 2-3 what, and is that the best for all mountain?

Yeah, ebay is good. I checked for skis over 190 cm tho and there were very few, but that's probly because it's mid-season.

salomon boots are great for someone coming from snowboarding....theyre wayy softer than most and tend to be great all mtn/park boots with a nice amount of flex...

PE's are a great choice for a first twin tip. other good choices are scratch sprayer or older scratch (non fs), dynastar nothin but trouble, line 1260's, salomon 1080's from last year or before.

No edit button? I meant 180, not 190 ;) Thanks for the tip on the solomon boots, i'll be sure to look at those first.
