REVELSTOKE, B.C. (CP) -- Eight American back-country skiers were killed and a number of others rescued after an avalanche crashed down a mountainside Monday in eastern British Columbia.
The slide came down near the Durrand Glacier, 37 kilometres north-northeast of the town of Revelstoke in the Selkirk Mountains. There were conflicting reports of how many people were caught in the avalanche, which happened late Monday morning.
Some reports put the group's size at 20 but Ian McKichan, regional coroner for the B.C. Interior, said it was a party of 10 people and a guide.
McKichan said eight died and two were injured.

Yeah, I just heard about this too. bad news indeed. It isn't a good time to be backcountry skiing in western canada without excelent avi knowledge. we've had very little snow all season, and all of a sudden we get 20+cm. so unstable. Avi's will happen without a human trigger even. Such a shame. hope for the best for the survivors and families of the skiers. peace all and ski well

They havnt released the names of the people that died in that avalanche, but my orthodontist was up there. He was telling me last week, when I was getting my braces tightened about this place called Selkirk Wilderness which is the trip that he goes on once a year. And this same company that runs the trip on snowcats is the one where all the people died. So it is weird he also like wrote the website on a sticky note, hopefully he wasnt one of the 8 that died. He was in a group of 20 though. But after a little research there are like 2 companies in canada with the same name selkirk wilderness, But I am still not sure yet.

I heard they were cross country skiers...they must have been traversing some bowl when it came down on them, being in a line and all.

one skier of the eight who died was from Colorado according to 9NEWS. I think that some of the skiers were pros...there were a total of 20 people in the group,(including filmers), and all the pros go to BC during this time...but i dont know thats what i think.

yeah, i heard about it this morning on the Today Show. NBC newsman, Matt Lawler (spelling?), interviewed Chris Davenport about alvalanches. Im really interested in who was involved in the accident if anyone has any info. My condolences go out to the families of the skiers.

Its been a pretty rough start to tthe season for the snowboard industry. Craig Kelly dying is huge. He is the guy Terje Haakonsen looked up to as the greatest snowboarder ever. Triston Picot also died a few weeks ago in an avalanche in Jackson that a bunch of other high profile riders were caught in.
Made in Tasmania.
** I personally believe skiing is gaining soul. It's great to see racers ripping the pipe and boarders crossing over to skiing. If anything is taking away from the soul of skiing, it's the skiers who are in it for the wrong reasons, and the ones who are in chat rooms bagging on other people's style when they should be skiing **
