Replying to Westers comments rom the front page interwiew and ignorance about hiphop and hiphop culture
Wester: Hip hop is just dominating our sport and the lyrics are so shallow it’s all about having a big car and that stuff.
Wester: It is so [materialistic] I prefer music with more intelligent lyrics.
these quotes are taken from the interview on the front page i was sad to read that people-specially park skiers, who are usually at least semi knowledgable about it and some what respectful towards it-still believe that all hip hop is just like what is seen on MTV, and that its all about cars money and bling. there is much more too it than that.
people need to actually be open minded and listen to real hip hop. Atmosphere, Aesop Rock, DL Incognito? Explain to me what is unintelligent about those lyrics. The reason people dont understand them is pure close-minded ignorance. they are unwilling to listen to it because they have the steriotypical image of the MTV thug wannabes in there mind, when in fact some of the indie and underground guys are could be considered some of the best lyricists of the era. it may be hard to understand at first, and alot of it doesnt really have a deep meaning. but when you figure out the metaphors and such, you realize how good it is.
i have nothing against people that dont like it, just people who say its stupid because of what the mainstream media shows them.
Wester: Yeah, maybe but it is built around that whole aggression thing? Should newschool have an aggressive image, it is supposed to be [about having fun].
i partially agree with this statement. alot of kids are just posers that try to get attention. go out and have fun. stop acting. but i dont really see an actual aggresive image. the stupid poser kids are that way and so is tanner hall, but 95% of pros act mature and composed on front of the cameras, even the 15 year olds. thats more where the image comes from.
Wester: Gangsta has meant baggy clothes all over the scene. It’s just one big baggy image, that’s boring, no one is trying anything new.
This is probabaly the most true statement in here. so many kids think clothes make them better and all. it helps you stand out, but thats it.
im not gonna lie and say i dont have flashy clothes, infact i have the oakley link outerwear, which is pretty damn stand-out-ish. but ive always liked baggy clothes and clothes that have crazy patterns. i mean i know alot of other people have the same clothes, but thats not ehy i bought it. i just like it. i ski with the style i like, and let others ski how they want.
and thats my semi-intelligent rant.
