Is there any effective way to get rail stains out of pants? Or should I just let my new pants develop "character"?

Its probably best to not have your pants on when doing such things. That way you can just wipe up the stain and it won't be on your pants.

yeah...that's what my dad suggested...but I believe it has instructions on the back of the bottle on how to get clr OUT of clothing. It's pretty corrosive stuff, and if it didnt eat the pants, it would definitely fuck the waterproofing and breathability.
The only thing I can think of is turpentine...and I'm hesitant to even try that. I'll just toss em in the wash at the end of the season with some delicate soap and we'll see what comes out.
Not a big deal...I guess it's just what I get for buying white pants.

it adds character. mine are so full of character that they needed a strip of ducktape on the inside of one leg to express themselves.

Is see that everyone is ignoring the fact that a higher end CARPET CLEANER will get the railstains off your pants. Rust or paint, doesn't matter.

dry cleaning got a fresh red rail stain off my tan jacket last year. You have to re-treat the jacket with teflon etc afterward though.

I don't know what the other stuff listed will do to your pants.
But Nikwax Teck Wash works pretty well. Not perfectly, but it is designed to work on outerwear, including goretex. My pants don't look perfect, but the stuff has helped them get pretty close.
