microsoft dun' fucked up again
DESCRIPTION:
Tomorrow, January 5th, a new variant of the malicious Internet/Email Sober worm is due to activate.
Past variants have had the ability to deactivate anti-virus programs, scan the infected computer for email addresses, send infected copies to those email addresses, and send out thousands of politically motivated email messages. The new variant may also contain additional, unknown attack features. It is estimated that past variants have already infected tens of thousands of machines, setting the stage for an even larger sequence of attacks and actions this time.
IMPACT POTENTIAL: This is similar to the virus that spread just after Thanksgiving.... expect to see an increase in unusual and suspicious email messages. If the worm spreads onto home computers and computers on the EHS campus, it could cause the network to become slow due to the huge amounts of network traffic that the worm could produce. Infections on the network could also spread quickly.
PROTECTION: All users with home computers are urged to update their Microsoft patches (
http://update.microsoft.com ), update and/or install anti-virus programs, install a firewall if you do not already have one, and be extremely careful about opening strange emails, and/or clicking on links in any suspicious email messages. If you are suspicous, just delete them.
Even if your computer is completely up-to-date, please be careful about suspicious emails from persons you don't know, or even from those you do know, as some of your friends and work acquaintances could become infected and inadvertently send out infected messages.
