seems to me like skiing has become a joke of what it once was. skiers seem more aware of the current snow sport fashion trends than friends i know who follow mainstream fashion are aware of theirs. this sport is not about the newest plaid or pale green suit.......or having 5 pairs of skis........or releasing the 09 fugative (lol).....its about having fun on a mountain. i no longer buy ski magazines, follow pro skiing, buy videos............its all just ridiculous.....
i also no longer ski park, do rails (not that i ever did) and this year im not grabbing.......im not in anyway saying that anyone else has to do this.....im doing it for myself and thats what everyone should do up on the hill......their own thing...
i somewhat agree. however, at the same time, im in no way wanting to revert back to the styles of when newschool skiing first started. i am all about pushing myself, and finding creative things to do on snow. i am also all about becomming a better skier everytime i ride, and not just park.
as for the fashion thing, i think SOME of that can be associated with the fact that many riders are pretty creative people, and being involved with artisticly designed clothing and creating new and unique styles is part of the fun of riding. at the same time, there are alot of people who lack that creativity, and find it neccesary to bite everyone elses style.
i wrote a response and realised that i said exactly what u did. The real riders wear what they need to wear and ride how they wan't to ride, although they may not be recognized as well as the pro's who do the tricks the people want to see rather than what they want to do
um...did it ever occur to you that maybe park was someones thing. And the fact that you no longer grab doesn't make you chill. For me my thing is just enjoying myself also and that is mostly park and jibbing out groomer runs. Rails show me so thats what I do. Whenver i go down a regular run I find myself trying to stall anything and buttering and spinning over any knole. People on this site are here because this is what they do and it aint ridiculous. Although I may agree about the style thing.
if park is fun to you than sweet, i enjoy skiing park when im not out west too. i think you missed the point......i said this is what im doing.....im not trying to get anyone else to do it.....im just saying people should be more into doing their own thing......and if you like park than rip the park. i just dont get it when i see people getting all pissed in the park or all decked out in all the newest trends, skiings not about that crap, its about having fun
i ski park cause im young and once i hit a certain age i be able to anymore. I can "rip" the mountain at like 35 a lot better than I would at skiing the park. Park takes such a toll on you and at 35-40 I would die ha. So I figure after a certain age I have the rest of my life to freeride outside the park.
skiing has always been a fashion show.. even in the days of neon one piece suits.. where have you been? its just now that NS is around.. you feel like its more prevelent than ever. I recently joined NS and am amazed how much information you can get on these forums alone.. It definitely brought me up to speed on things. I was still riding concepts and candides.. and now after reviews i know what skis suit me better and what clothing is the best as far as waterproofing and price. its not a joke at all.. its called evolving..
that was pretty dramatic of you, i dont nessisarily like all the new fashion stuff and how many people are soo concerned about it but quitting park skiing entirely just because of it seems a bit drastic. But maybe the skiing at yur mountain is actually worth doing unlike in northwest new york, where most skiing sucks
i just think the sport is getting way to material driven.........that is all. im not dissing park, or companies or whatever........i just think people need to worry less if puffy's are in or out this season, like a thread a couple months back was wondering...
our sport is going in a possitive direction. it doesn't matter how main-stream kids get so long as the industry continues to grow. im not saying that i give a fuck what people have to say to me or about my skiing, but im gonna ski with the hope that maybe someone will notice me and say, "that was pretty cool." that is part of what skiing is about. im not saying that what you said was wrong, i just dont see any point in excluding some of the less-important but relevant aspects of skiing
^ thats why i responded about skiing park. I care nothin for fashion of skiing when you said most people do. THe jacket I bought this year was the first jacket i got in like 4 years.
its just because the image of our sport has change a lot over the past 5-6 years , its now a sport that lil urban/suburban kids see as a cool activity, like smokin weed, basketball or rap music. Its become a very fashionable movement.
ok what's one good reason why we shouldnt wear stylish clothes? I mean it isnt really any harder to do than wearing ugly clothes and I'd rather look good than bad
^cause i dont want to, my skis aren't going to fall off in the air, what do i need to grab them for........i used to think like all you but my opinion just changed.........that is all
Personaly I like all aspects of freeskiing and we shoukld respect all of them whether you ski backcountry or spend your life in the park. We are all skiers together. As for fashion I'd rather have a ski that performs well rather then one that looks cool.
I agree the hill shouldnt be a fashion show and that kind of stuff. But I have a little trouble understanding your reverse evolution, not skiing park, not skiing rails and now getting rid of grabs. Are you gunna start snow plowing after? Like yeah park is the new trend on the mountain and now that other people are starting to do it doesnt mean its not doing your own thing.
