When is a good time to go to nz to ski?

Normally starts to snow mid june/ start of july.
The safest time to come is August, then there is usually snow until October.

when does the snow start droppin. would it be reasonable to move out in june and expect some good stuff?

don't expect to do any powder skiing in June thats for sure, snow doesn't really start going strong untill end of July, any skiing in June is done on man made snow pretty much

If you come out in June, there will be a lot of boring sitting around for a month or so.
If you're limited by finances, wait until August and make sure you can stay til end of September.

^they pretty much summed it up. THere are freak snow falls, in april and may though. Mt Manganui can crank after those.

thanks for the help. maybe ill live in oregon for june to july and then move to nz until september.
