How to wash a waterproof shell

I got mud all over my jacket and pants and im afraid to put them in the washing machine because it might take the waterproofing off.

Put in the machine with no soap and then let it dry hanging up. Its the dryer's heat that typically causes problems.

or wash it with soap, then use nikwax
