Avon, Colorado Recommendations

Alright, I'm going out to Avon for spring break this year. It looks as if close nearby is beavercreek/copper/breckenridge, vail and maybe keystone. Where would you guys recommend going? We probably won't do a ton of park, but some, and I would love to hit up powder and some backcountry stuff. I can ski for 5 days and maybe 2 days at one place and 3 at another. Recommendations anyone?

Oh ya, and price is also a factor. So vail isn't really part of the picture, just nearby i suppose.

I said price was a factor :p I'd really like some serious recommendations though. I was thinking maybe 2 at Breck and 3 at Copper.

We really didn't have a choice, we have a timeshare and a week came available in Avon. But hey, I can't complain, sure its kinda out there but lodging is free.

How will the snow conditions be during spring break? Which places will be better than others? I'm kinda leaning towards 2 days at vail and 3 days at copper right now.

last year when i went out, and stayed in frisco, i skied breck and keystone, i wasnt that impressed by breck, alot of groomers and not that much bc or woods but they just added that new chair so now the top of the mountain in more accesible..
i really liked keystone, maybe it was the fact that it snowed the night before i went there but as long as u go the outback (the farthest mountain from the base) then ur sure to find good glades and possibly powder

breck has some good skiing off the T-bar and the sickest park but thats it vail will be great but the conditions can be soooo vAried you could get a ton of pow cause thats when co gets a lot or it could be bluebird slushy if you have the oppertunity i would play it by year to see whaats best and what you wanna do but im really not a copper fan

Just hitup Vail man. It has got everything you need and is pretty close to Avon. Beaver Creek would also be an option as Avon is about as close as you can get to Beaver Creek without actually being up in the BC village. As far as price goes...I think all the mountains you mentioned are gonna be pretty damn expensive for tickets. Just pack a lunch and you will save a ton of money. Keystone and Breck I don't think are really a good option for you. They are just so much farther away then Vail that it doesn't make much sense to me to commute that far. Have fun dude!

Tickets are only about $10 more to BC and Vail. You'll be spending double that to get to Breck/Key, and at least $10 getting to Copper. Either way, Vail and BC are great for skiing pow. Vail is sort of flat but the cliffs and stashes off of Mongolia are pretty fun. Breck is the best for park and has some great stashes (chair 6, E chair, devils crotch/mineshaft, peak 7 hike-to terrain, etc). Keystone has sick rails and can be lapped quickley, but the only good "real skiing" is in the trees. Copper is a great all around mountain and about 25 min from Avon.

Beaver Creek is the closest resort to Avon (Avon is pretty much at the base of BC). Vail is just down the highway from Avon, also pretty close. Copper is the next closest, but you have to drive over Vail pass to get there, which is quite a trip if it is snowing. You can buy 4 packs to Copper online and save some money, otherwise you are looking at about $80 a day to ski Beaver Creek and Vail.

It would cost you more to drive all the way to Breck than to just stay in Avon and drive like 2 minutes to Beaver Creek. Breck isn't right off the interstate like Vail and Copper, you have to drive about 15 minutes once you get to the Frisco exit, which makes it almost an hour in total, but if conditions are bad on Vail pass it could take 3 times that, sometimes more in big storms. Seriously check out Copper 4 packs on their website. Hopefully they are still selling them.

Alright, thanks for all the input. I think I have decided that we will ski vail for 2 days and beaver creek for 3.

yeah if you're gonna be in avon just hit up bc and vail. tickets are barely more expensive, and there's plenty of terrain at both places to keep you entertained for 5 days. no reason to drive a half hour (or more if the weather is really shitty) when you can be at vail or beav in like 5-10 minutes.

spring break crowds are always horrible though. i try and avoid summit county like the plague. so many texans.
there's an awesome mexican restaurant in avon. i forget what it's called (helpful, i know) but it's in a small shopping center.

I suggest doing vail for 3 and BC for 2. Believe me, Vail is huge, and even in 3 days there is no way you are going to be able to thoroughly cover all the terrain that they have to offer. My suggestion take the gold peak quad up all the way, get off an take chair 11 to the summit. Then take the cat walk off to the left all the way to blue sky and hit that shit up for a while. Check out steep and deep, and lovers leap for the more gnarly shit, or check out the runs on the otherside of bluesky(on the right if you are on the lift) for some sick glades. If you get bored in bluesky, check out some of the other bowls. Some of my other favorties are highline and blueox for length and steepness, and chair 4 can be a fun one to lap. Check out the cliffs under chair 4 and bust em huge if you wanna be like me (haha). Have fun at Vail dude, it truly is immensely huge and unlike many other resorts.

One last thing- when you go to Vail park in like west vail in a shopping center and take the bus so you don't have to pay $17 a day to park in the village or lionshead
