If your connection is LAN, check the administrative computer's settings to see if your computer is connected to the right server name. Except for that I cannot help you. I know that if the settings are wrong, the computer will not be connected, my school operates with the LAN connection. I got to explore with it a bit.

Try running system restore. The most likely problem is that your router is retarded and at some point you have conflicting ip addresses (i.e. it thinks two machines on your network have the same ip address). Try cycling the power on your router (unplug for 10 seconds) and reboot the laptop.
There are a crapload of things that could be currently wrong. Try another cable (a short one) to make sure that isn't it, as well.
