Go to iTunes Preferences: Advanced: Importing and change the "Import Using" bar to MP3 Encoder. Then select the song in iTunes, and go to Advanced: Convert Selection to MP3. Now you have two copies of the song, one in each format. Import the MP3 file. Sometimes the MP3s sound like they are skipping in Final Cut Express (at least FCE2), so if you have the CD it's better to just import the file right off of the disc.

i don't know if final cut express is the same as final cut pro hd but with pro what you need to do is convert the m4a file in itunes, BUT convert it to .AIFF encoder, this way the audio quality will sound much better in your timeline.
Once this is done, go to file, import, and select the song, the song should be by where your video clips are, then just drag it in.

bitterwithin is right... you should convert it to aiff or wav, both file types are really big so i would only reccomend converting the songs you are going to use
