Well...if you want to do things right you're gonna want to use an air brush. You'd need to start by sanding down the entire helmet. It's quite a complicated process and not one that consists of slapping a few coats of paint onto a helmet. If you want it done right...there are numerous places you can send your helmet.
Try - List Designs
- Axcel Fast Graphics
- Troy Lee Designs (VERY EXPENSIVE)
Search the internet for a "How To" and you might find something a bit more extensive.
You can use spraypaint if you know what you are doing.
First close all vents and remove the earflaps as well. Purchase some masking tape at the hardware store. Don't use duct or electrical tape instead, or your helmet will look like shit. Use the masking tape to over up everything that you dont want paint on, say the edge of the brim (on a 9.9 or BL). An exacto knife can be helpful in cutting the masking tape to cover things exactly, but remember that more tape is better than a little, because you can go back and fix it. Then tape the straps to the top of the inside of the helmet, so that they are out of the way and you dont get paint all over them which looks sloppy. Take some newspaper and go outside(so you don't stink up the house) in a dry place. It doesn't have to be warm, but if the paint job gets wet it will ruin it. Place the paper on a flat surface, and then place the helmet in the center the same way you would wear it, shell side out (there are some stupid people in this world). Then paint the helmet holding the can of spraypaint about a foot and a half away from the helmet. Go lightly and don't dump the paint on, otherwise you will get drips and the paint will take longer to dry. Sometimes it is best to do a few coats if you want a durable finish. Personally, I like Krylon Fusion paint for helmets, as it is formulated to stick to plastic and is quite durable. It comes in a variety of fun colors as well. After you let the paint dry for at least 30 minutes, take off the masking tape, and let it dry outside for at least another 30 min, as it still smells. After that, the paint should be dry and you have a new colored helmet for all your friends to gawk at .
i would say just buy a new one if you can. Most home-made paint jobs don't come out looking so good, whether it be on skis/poles/helmets/what have you.
I already have another primary helmet, but this is one i just want as a backup or just a fuck around helmet so im not looking for it to be exactly perfect
i painted mine
all i did was sand it down and put duck tape all over the padding/cloth stuff and shut the vents
the spray paint can broke so long story short i ended up painting on the spray paint (dont ask)
i put on probably 4 layers and it looks fine not perfect but good enough for me
everything mentioned above is fine, I suggest masking all foam because I dont think spray paint and foam mix... mask it all off real clean, get a box large enough and hang it in the box with a bent up coat hanger, first sand the whole helmet with some medium sandpaper, paint a coat, wet sand it after its all dry, paint another coat, wet sand that and then paint another coat if you are using spray paint
I converted my gay colored Giro 9.9 to flat black using this method and it hasn't chipped or scuffed yet...
And a brains a brain. You only have one. Different types of skiing need different helmets. If you were going to alaska to ski with seth, you wouldn't wear the same helmet if you were to go and do urban rails.
no there not.. theres so many people with them now.. sometimes it help with steez.. i wear jsut because id rather not have to worry about smashing my head on a rail or somethign.. who cares if you wear a helmet now.. its not like its uncool.. personaly people who dont wear them are the idiots
