yes, the start up cost is very high. you also need a good location. keep in mind that ski towns tend to be very VERY slow in the summer. even with a bike shop, you probably wouldn't be able to make a lot. just make up for it with sales in the winter.

btw, in whistler village, the stores doesnt have appartement on the top..they are different condos that are dayly rented..

sell golf stuff in the summer if you go to a place with a lot of golf. One of the ski shops by me does that. The other one sells bikes and kayaks and stuff like that.

but yea basically a two stories building, bottom a shop and top simply where i live, snowboarding and ski shop, simply because a skiing shop in my area doesn't get anywheres without snowboards. It's that or a sk8 shop, big money in those ;)

man all those places mentioned all have wicked ski shops.... not devoted 100% to newschool but if you dont have carving/un-twins you wont get anywhere.... so im thinking it will be hard trying to compete with the other big wicked shops

If you are going to start up a shop good for you! Like everyone else said the first couple of years will be tough, just like any other shops. If you really need to i guess you could always sell drugs...

o the plan was to deal for sure... there would be about 4 or 5 of us in on it, including a couple big mountain skiers, and 2 snowboarders, so we could cater to lots.. We definitley planned on selling not only twins but would be devoted towards it. since we all skate we could change in the summer to bike/skate. And I kno there would be massive competition but it would most likely be a side thing while we all worked other jobs.. Otherwise thanks for the input..

yep, the economy and industry suck right now. however, if you want to open an all newschool shop in the future, there's hope. i mean, compared to last season, twin tip sales have skyrocketed. they're still not even close to comparing to race ski sales, but in a few years an all newschool shop could be fesable in some areas. the same thing happened with snowboards. twinnies probably won't become that huge, but hopefully more marketable. we really need a shop here that's devoted only to newschool skiing.

ya, well buying property or renting in a ski town is incredibly expensive, then you have your business liscenece and utilities bills and you have to get in touch with the ski companies and it's alot more expenisve and complicated then you think, but at the same time that would be a cool job, so maybe do some research and come to your own deciion what would be best for you

Think about the costs...it all has to be bought up front you may get 30 or 60 days credit but probably not if you are a brand new shop way to big of a risk for companies to take. So figure even if you start small 12 different pairs of skis...24 to 25 sizes of them times 2 or 3 each...at a whole sale of say 250 bucks a pop thats call it 50 skis at $250, thats 12grand+. Do the same for boots but say you choose 6 types of boots, all the different sizes to make it decent you still are talking at least 50 pairs of boots...at call it 200 bucks. Thats 10grand. Add in 50 pairs of binding, at 100 bucks a pair...5Grand. so far with just skis, bindings and boots you are talking $25000. Add in googles, gloves, helmets, clothes, and racks to hang stuff on. Business expenses, such as a cash register, equipment to mount skis, insurance, rent, utilities (lights dont stay on if you dont pay your bills) alarm system...figure opening year a minimum of 100grand if you do it right. Start real small you are still talking a large investment. Thats not even including in salaries, benefits (health insurance is expensive shit), and other costs. With a bad economy, people dont spend as much on things like skiing so save your money go to college get a job you dont mind having, its less work and aggrivation...if you couldnt tell I thought about this before. You could do very well for yourself if it went well but competition in resort towns is fierce, and someone who has a huge operating budget compared to what you could scrape together could kill you by undercutting prices.

start as an order only store or something. Set up a desk at a ski hill somewhere. Then start offering more and more stuff.
