So today was my first dat skiing this season. I had fun but i realized how much i really suck. I am good with carving and the general skiing techniques but i can never seem to progress in the park. I have a problem with just being too scared. Call me a pussy if u want, but i know u guys were all in this same situation at one point and i just want your tips and how u guys get the balls to try stuff.
ive learned this season that jumps and rails that you make you self are much less intiadating. the landings softer, and there is just something about feeling safe on something you have built. try it i promise you will get better, unless your really a pussy
I used to be the same way back in the day. You just have to realize that you're going to go out of your comfort zone when you're learning something new, just go for it.
fo reall, you just gotta go for it, dont think. Then you'll do it, and if you get it, sweet keep going and do it again. If not ya just gotta get up, brush it off and try again.
People wont make fun of you for trying, the only way that you'll get made fun of in the park is if you dont.
just yesterday and today Ive gotten a lot better and more comfortable, doing 1's off everything I can, thats it besides some boxes till my thumb gets better.
yeah i just watch ski movies, get pumped, listen to some music (S6 soundtrack works nicely) to pump you up and just fuckin give 'er!!! and ski with people who are better than you, that way you'll progress more quickly, cuz if ur not pushing yourself then they should be. and it also helps to set goals for yourself. dont like set your goal to spin a 7 after u just stomped your fisrt three. just take small steps. like do a box. then switch out. then same thing on a rail. then unnaty on box, then rail. then 270 off box, then rail. 270 on box, then rail. baby steps.
Wear headphone (at leaszt in one ear if not two), it helps soooo much, i dunno why. I used to get really scared before comps until i started wearing headphones, just makes me relax, its like you have the park to yourself and no one matters.... i promise- try it!
ski with good people, after moving to pc there are so many good kids, and when I see them do a manuver, I tell myself that I can do it also. Idk whenever I do a train I look ahead and see someone do a trick I've never done and I tell myself I could do that.
Say it's a big jump, just go strait at it and not think. That's the key is just not thinking, don't think about the gap, the size of the jump or whatever becasue when you are in the air, you won't notice.
first, dont say u suck, otherwise you'll just settle with sucking and not care anymore... so do simple shit, 180s, grabs, 180s with grabs...dont just be like "I wanna do 720" and then when u pussy out say u suck...start small and think positive
yeah i have the same problem i dont commit enough, like ever so im really gunna work on not thinking as much and just goin for it, cuz i didnt commit to a rail and it sucked
i just tell myself "pin it, you fucking fairy" and then go for it. the beginning of the season is usually like what you were describing, though- it takes a couple times to get used to throwing yourself 30, 40, 50, 60+ feet through the air while spinning.
What you need to work on is having fun and skiing with other people. Having fun as in throwing spread eagles and joking around. If you super uptight and serious about skiing in the park, you may never progress. When you ski with with other people you also have more fun. Just remember that if you dont want to try something-dont do it. Skiing is very mental. Whenever I dont feel good about trying a new trick or something, thats always when I get hurt.
i usually dont wait before doing things, if im gonna try somthing i just go for it, i also tell my friend to puch me in the arm if i dont try something on the NEXT RUN because i used to say ill try somtime that day, and then try it once at the end
haha thats exactly what i do! i fuck around so much and without even really trying i end up progressing because im only worried about having fun.
but its so funny to come into the park lek you are some random gaper and like snowplow and fall on your ass right infront of every body thats waiting. you get some wierd looks but its kind of a thing you can only do once in awhile. but i do so much random shit like that just to keep it fun.
I know the feeling. Especially being a girl it's tough, because I get bashed on daily about wanting to learn park. but the thing of it is, once you get out there, if you talk to people and they know its your first time or whatever, they really support you
I was skiing and actually had someone come up to me and ask if i would go to the park. after i said i wasnt sure cuz i didnt know much, he took me and showed me and helped me learn some stuff. It was fun, but i was scared to mess up too. but i did it anyways
i even had people cheer for me when i landed a jump good. it was cool. it makes you feel good.
Sometimes being a pussy is good. I skied a nice line today, perfect untouched pow, but it dead ended at a small cliff. I was alone, so I just stood there looking at it, saying to myself "come on, do it you fucking pussy". Eventually I realized I wasn't going to do it, so I came out the side of it after a lot of flailing and hanging on trees. I checked out the landing, and it was a rock slab and water ice covered in like 3" of fluff. Glad I was a pussy, that would have sucked.
But yeah, I guess for the park, you should just sack up. I just hate hitting the ground and getting hurt, I'm kind of a baby like that.
dude once you try the trick your like damn, thats easy, why was I scared, like there was this flat down with like a one foot gap, at first I was scared then the kids I was with told me to do it, so I was like well I guess I have to, so I did it, and got it, then I was like, Jesus, why was I scared of that
eh, everyone sucks at the beginning of the season. they havnt been really skiing in 5 months or so. but yea, im usually the one in the group that says fuck it, or the guinea pig like "is that jump big enough" or "will we have enough speed" im usually the tester. whatever. its fun, gets my adrenaline going thinking i could really come up short or really to far. whatever, its not balls, its a lack on common sense at some times. dont think about what can happen, thats retarded and stupid. youll get yourself to messed up to do it.go into it with no worries. a "fuck this, im doing this shit and showing all of my friends that they are pussies" sense. it works well.
Hey thanks alot all u guys for help. i thought when i wrote this i was gonna get alot of shit and get made fun of and stuff, but i havent seen one mean comment. I think its good to see that maybe newschoolers.com is starting to become more of a brotherhood type thing and not just a bunch of skiers bashing on eachother.
You gotta be confident to. I think that is super important. If you aren't confident about what you are about to attempt you will probably half ass it and eat shit. Take what I did today for example. Went to 270 on to a rail. I wasn't feeling confident, half assed my spin, and ended up doing a 90 to nuttage. Don't be like me. BE CONFIDENT.
just think of how pros will fall at the first kink of a 50-stair urban rail, and still are able to get up and walk away at the bottom. Then go hit a 10ft flat box in the park and u realize that ur probably not gonna get seriously injured. Im just getting over my pussyness this year(hopefully)
Whenever I try something new i always do it and the end of the day. Don't think about it much the whole day. When i get the jump or rail or whatever your trying to do, think about what you need to do. Visualize and just stomp it. Don't be afraid.
im in the same boat right now and I have a lot of older kids that are in collage right now but when they used to be around i was really pumped up but now i just cant seem to get the balls to go for it...
ok all you have to do is try it thats it i used to suck to and some days im just a plain pussy but what helps is for your friends to push you. i tell my friends im gonna do a 3 over the 60 tom. and then ill get there and they'll be like so you doin the 3 and they'll make me do it. your scared at first but it pays off in the end
trying stuff small is good. this is my second season back on skis and my first day i was throwing 3s off a one foot drop. by the end of the next day i had a 360mute over a 10ft gap down no problem
