OK, now Im reaaaly pissed. After christmas? WTF? The weather has been cold for the last 3 weeks! Why cant they open? Jesus... Every other hill around here is open!
Every other hill is open, poley even has the park open with jumps and all ... And they never update their site, and its a crappy site (in the pamphlet thing that they gave out at the ski swap it said that they made a new website, but they didnt)
thats is trueit was not built riht so watter is going out as fast as it comes in. its not good
but i have heard from one of the pro patrolers that it may open this weekend after new years
yeah i heard that they didnt line the bottom and it was eroding and going into the other resevoirs water supply which caused the snow guns to make brown snow
dont know about that but the theory they were working on is that f they scrape he irt down to bed rock it would hold water if they just lined the sides, but the bed rock is all cracked and shit so it doesnt wor like they wanted
Does anybody know what company designed this? Or if any engineering/earth science company had any input on this reservoir?
I know these problems are all RUMOURS but these are design factors which should have been thought out and adapted as the project went ahead...just speaking from experience with similar projects...
Opening Date Delay Update
I wanted to bring our season pass holders, supporters and chomping at the bit skiers and snowboarders up to speed on our season to date.
First of all, it has been an unusually mild start to the season. We’ve only had a handful of really good snowmaking nights when the temperature got below -10. Plus we had a torrential downpour late December that wiped out our precious little natural snow. Wentworth is the Maritimes largest ski area and has the most terrain to cover in order to get open. This is not an excuse, just a fact. That being said, we’ve had other challenges to contend with.
As you may have heard, we had mechanical problems with our main snowmaking pump. We immediately switched to our smaller, less powerful back up snowmaking system and have been making snow whenever weather permitted. The seasonal nature of a ski area presents many challenges for mechanical and electrical systems and despite our extensive maintenance programs, we are sometimes plagued with bad luck.
Our smaller snowmaking pump has less water pressure, therefore, it does not work as well at higher elevations and we can not run as many guns. That’s why you may not have seen any snowmaking on the webcam recently. The guns have been blasting away on the Sissy the last few days.
The good news: The main snowmaking pump will be up and running today, bringing us back to full capacity. You’ll see a real difference in snowmaking now that we’ll be running all our guns.
We know all too well that snowmaking is the life blood of any ski area, particularly with our mild climate. This is why we made a major investment in a 20 million gallon reservoir at the top of the mountain. Once completed, it will provide us with plenty of water at significantly higher pressures. This will allow us to run a greater number of high efficiency snow guns from the top of the mountain to the bottom.
I want to thank everyone for staying positive and showing their support. We certainly appreciate it. It’s been challenging and frustrating for all of us, believe me! A real show of support was New Years Eve. Even though we weren’t open for skiing, the evening was a huge success with about 150 people ringing in 2006!!
Here’s to good skiing, good snowmaking and good times at Ski Wentworth in 2006.
