Making beats and other music

what is the best program to produce and make beats and other music on the comp?

As far as hip hop/urban. Alot of people in the industry stick to primarily using hardware like mpcs, audio keyboards, groove makers.

If you can get a good keyboard (I'm running a yama portable grand piano) with some descent software, you can put out some pretty cool stuff. Alot of the keyboards come with lots of different instrument/voices to work with, so gives you alot of options.

As far as software: One of the industry standards and is recognized in alot of studios is 'ProTools'. Also, Reason 3.0 is great. One downside of these programs is that they have a pretty large learning curve and definitely aren't easy to pick up on to.

For starting out, Acid Pro is a great program to use and is pretty user friendly. Fruity loops is another program that is good and is even more geared towards techno/trance/electronic if you want to go that route.

What GD said is generally right, but producers now are starting to combine hardware/software. Things like Acid Pro and ProTools are mainly set up for recording into and for using midi instruments. Things like Reason and FL Studio are for drums and general computer generated instruments.

i have magix music maker i think its pretty sweet thats what i use all the time. 9th wonder who makes beats for murs and made a beat for jay-z on the balck album uses frooity loops(sp.)

But he doing something he loves and does really well. If you listened to some of his music you know that it takes alot of time to make tracks like he does. Also, he is giving all his music to us free. Why the hell are you complaining when he is making music(which he obviously loves to do)?

pro tools is the primarily used recording software....but in terms of composing I would say its definitely the Logic Pro family

I recently got into making music through electronics. It's a lot of damn fun.

If you're getting into making beats, I'd recommend Fruity Loops 5.

I created my first song through FL studio 5 and it took about 18 - 20 hours in total. (I first had to learn how to use the program)

The funny part was I barely even scratched the surface of the capabilities of the program. I mean, I learned a lot, but the program has a tons of depth.
