Replying to Fireworks MX help

Basically, my problem is this:

previously, when i tried to draw a vector, using the pen tool, as i selected each new point, the line between the points was not visible, as in, there was no more than the blue fireworks line, but not any color fill per se.

Now, however, when i use the pen tool, the line appears between the selected points, something i find quite irsome. it doesn't help for me to set the pen fill to nothing, it just goes back to being white size 1 hard pixel, which i don't want in between the points... all i want is to select, then fill color.

i had no problem with this on one project, and there is still no problem on that project with it. but when i open something new, all hell breaks loose.

so, how can i cancel the fill between points everywhere in the pen tool?
