Have you guys all heard about the North vs South competition at Sierra on Saturday? I was just wondering if anybody knows if it will have skiing, or just boarding. Sounds like it may be snowboard only, but I was hoping somebody could confirm that.

Im okay with snowboarders, but I dislike thier gapers because they only do it cuz "its the cool thing to do" and they dis all 2plankers cuz they are "oldschool" and "lame" and "gay" little do they know...
But yeah... talented snowboarders that can shred serious gnar are fun to watch.. Ill admit that.

Yeah... we are adding gapers every day... bandwagon jumpers... who used to ski, then they turned to 12 years old and switched to snowboarding, and now skiing is cool again so they switch back. Been seeing alot of that going on lately...

haha. i switched back to skiing before moseley won the gold so i dont think im a trend follower. Anyways, there are A LOT more skiers out there killing it now, which i think is sick. If people switch sports I'm not worried about it...so far.

pollard rides both, snowboards and skis, but i'd say he's more of trend setter, not a trend follower

Yeah, you switched back before Freeskiings pivitol moment. (Man.. that was ALL it needed to get going.) Your save from ridicule. And yeah... theres alot more skiers going big these days, Whats funny is all the gapers still thinking skiers wear one piecers and spandex. makes me laugh every time...

i love one pieceers in purple birght green and expecially yellow
I think your getting a little caught up in this gaper thing, just because someone learns to ski on some twin tips doesn't mean "their doing it because its the cool thing to do" their doing it because its fun, well at least thats my assumption, and i think that applies to skiiers and snowboarders
its the "cool thing to do", because its fun
growing popularity will cause more people to say ooh that looks cool and fun, i want to try which is the point of getting a sport to grow
lay off the "gapers" cuz their probably just tryin to have some fun and kick it.
but i will admit there are the few meat heads who think that there better than everyone else because their rich or whatever, cover those fuckers in a pile of snow
I say bring on the newbs cuz skiing IS the cool thing to do

Exactly. Im not talking about the people who are LEARNING... Im talking about the people who say they are tight and that they go up 250 times a year and then suck balls.

another case of snow discrimination.

you guys don't know jack about snow discrimination.
try coming up as a snowboarder in the late 80's. you had to get certified beginner, intermediate or advanced. if you didnt wear you arm band or got caught on a trail over your rating you were banned. At my home mountain we were only allowed mon-fri during the day..pretty convienent seeing all the snowboard kids were in school. not allowed at night or on weekends. not allowed to jump..patrol would hide in the woods next to anything you could get airborn from. not one freeskier kid has ever expeirenced the pure evil wraph of a ski patroller like the early snowboards did.
every freeskier should be lucky that they don't have to repeat the 10 to 15 years of disrrimination that snowboarders had fr0m 1980-1995.
you guys are very lucky..right from the very start..great parks, great equipment and most of all an overwelming exceptance from the ski resort industry(notice I didnt say ski industry..theres a big different and thats another subject)

eric, you are right on all of that, how do i know? cause i was riding a snowboard too in the late 80's ha, a burton directional. Being bored with skiing the flat hills here I gave it a try, and went back to skiing once twins came out.
My point with the post was just why the hell not let skiers in,what harm could be done by it? even if its against the boarders.....its just "board"" or "boards" these days anyways.

yeah..you're right. I was just pionting out some history that I lived through to get to this piont in snowsports. Most kids on this site cry out bloody murder about being discriminated by snowboarders, snowboard companies, snowboard events. They don't know jack about the truth of the situation.
on the events its a two way street. being someone who is tring to put together events for both skiing and snowboarding I'll tell you this.. neither side really wants to fully support combined events. do just a ski event and you can get tons of product for prizes. Add snowboarding and suddenly the product vaults get slamed shut. same goes for the snowboard companies when we try to add a ski divison the the event.

PS- all of the friday night events at Boreal all ski/snowboard.

Yeah, but Skiers have had discrimination ever since 95... I mean look, when terrain parks started to open, and places like mammoth and big bear, skiers were not allowed in them because they were meant for snowboarding only, and not only that, but once terrain parks WERE open to skiers, boarders were always bitched off because skiers were "poaching" thier terrain and such. Mountain seperation became typical.(The gay Disney movie, Johnny Tsunami kinda points this out)
Finally, the last few years, both boarders and skiers have become more friendly with each other and more accepting. Sure there are still those with discriminating "SNOWIST" attitudes, but for the most part, its become better. Hopefully it will stay that way.

Pretty much I used to skiboard...but like Mike Nick and Pollard, I think it was just an open mind that had a good idea that obviously had to be refined by larger boards. I support anyone who pushes progression...even if it means daffy cork 9s.

terrian parks used to be a place where resorts could "quarrantine" the snowboarders and keep them away from the rest of their proper skiing quests. snowboarders rightfully felt shafted and showed their frustration when skiers started poaching their little world of park.
Having worked in the ski resort industry for over 10 years I've been exposed to alot of management level views on snowboarding. Believe me when I say that you guys dont know jack about on snow discrimination. It is still going on today at a level I find rather shocking. If there wasn't so much money at stake..many mountains would do away with snowboarders. There are alot of very old school alpine purists that are in positions of power in this industry. They look at snowboarding as a necesary evil with alot of $$$$ attached. Thats something you newschoolers we'll never have to contend with.

eric i know firsthand that you were right......but here is an interesting take on things from my perspective.
Hills in the midwest have absolutely embraced snowboarding. In fact, my local hill tyrol basin at one point had the second best halfpipe in the world behind breckenridge. Bottom line, my mountain was saved by terrain parks. So, the appreciation is there.
Having worked for vail resorts though, everything you said about the "alpineists" is true.
Just let us in the olypmics and we will be happy, it shouldnt be one or the other, both deserve to be there.
So Eric, do you board only then?

okay ill take some of your word from it, but nevertheless, with the advent of snowboarding, it brought good and bad at the same time. The bad thing is that it brought on this whole war between boarders and skiers and such, boarders that say that skiers stab thier snowboards with thier poles, and skiers that talk about boarders that destroy the powder by heelsliding. It kinda made it a drag. The good was that it changed what the slopes looked like and the shapes of skis themselves. When snowboards started to change shape, so did skis, and parabolic became superior over straight planks. then, in the late 90's the ski companies started to bring back the old twintip olin mark IV's or w/e and make twintips. Salomon was very successful at this. Snowboarding changed skiing, and for the better I should say.

definately for the better.....
I grew up skiing on a mtn that is 280 ft. vertical, Im old enough for this to be back in a day when double twister (now known as shiftys) was the trick to do. Let alone the ever elusive "double helicopter". Around 15 years old I got bored with skiing and quit. It just wasnt any fun anymore...
Three years ago a buddy of mine talked me into going out and seeing how skiing had changed. Ive been hooked ever since and now moving to Tahoe will be my second season long move to somewhere just to ski.
Snowboarding definately changed skiing for the better.
Back on topic, skiers are used to getting shortchanged and competing in the same comp as boarders for less in prizes...just letting us compete will help that change.

Yeah, both of them kinda are better because of each other... without snowboarding, there would be no twintips, without skiing, which brought chairlifts to be built, there would be no snowboarding.
and without either of them, there would be no point of a winter X games...
