I have to leave university perhaps...

I just called to get my marks for university's first term. I finally got through the touchtone system. None of my marks were yet recieved. Fine I thought, a little wierd.
Next I called the business office to see how much I owe for next term so I can mail a check. It should be around $1000 after scholarships and bursaries. So finally got through today, and turns out they said I owed close to $9000. My voice cracked 'What?!?!?'. I said, 'but that's impossible. With my scholarship, I can't even owe that much money at the beginning of the first term. Does that include scholarship money?'. The woman replies 'Sorry sir, you don't have a scholarship.' I respond 'Yes, yes I do.' she continues 'Well, you declined your scholarship and bursary.'
This is so fucked up. I didn't decline anything, maybe I had to accept the stuff AGAIN or something. What the hell, I remember I accepted everything when I wrote them last spring. I am paying for my education myself and bottom line is I don't have enough money to pay close to $9000. I really see no way I can pay this money, if I can't, I have to leave the school. That means all of the money I've already paid was a complete and utter waste. I wasted half a year in classes that don't even matter because I won't get the credits. I have no plan for what I can do if I can't go back to school.
I still have yet to get in touch with the awards office and straighten everything out. Things look very bad, my life is a mess.

Seems to be a pretty common thing among universities and colleges: messing EVERYTHING up. I would strongly recommend going into the office personally (I know you're out east, but when you get back) and talking with people until it gets sorted out.. why would anyone ever decline scholarships?
I wouldn't worry about it too much. Eventually they'll realise that they messed up and you'll get your money.
If worst comes to worst, you can just take a semester off, re-apply, get your scholarships and bursaries again, and conitnue.. that way you haven't lost your credits/time from the first semester.
Good luck!

Wow, I sure hope so Matt. Thanks for shedding a little hope on things. I tried to ask the same thing to the woman, why anyone would ever decline scholarships?
I still can't get into the Awards office. Must have called 15 times.

I am from the province with the worst student loan program in Canada. Even though I am paying for university myself, I can't get a Student loan. It's bullshit. I had to get a normal loan from a bank, just to make it as things are. So, I am paying great amounts of interest for the money I am using to pay. Even with my loan and money I've saved up, It's still only about half of what's needed to pay for the year at university.

I suggest doing what Matt said PLUS talking to Financial Aid and / or an ombudsperson or some sort of counselor. As horrible as your situation is, I'm sure it's not unique and there must be someone in the school who can give you the advice you seek.

this will sound stupid compared to the wise matt, but university's do things like that on purpose. i've had a problem with every school i've gone to screwing with my financial information. due to the lack of money, they've got to find it somewhere, and some rich kid off daddys money won't mind paying for a mistake like that...
just my two cents on life.

Well, I finally got through to someone. The awards office phones still being picked up, but I got in touch with one of the people working there. Luckily, they weren't a pissed off student employee, they really wanted to help me out. Turns out, there was most likely an administrative error. The only way for someone to decline a scholarship is to accept admissions at another university. And that I did not do. I also found out last night, I have an additional $1000 on my scholarship I never knew about, great news. I couldn't recieve my marks because the touchtone system was messed up through all of Xmas break. Great service they have there...

Great news, Dan! I don't know what it is about schools.. they teach all this wonderful stuff, but they have a very hard time practising it.
Our school has this huge technology division, but we can't log on to our online tools (schedule, marks, etc) between 11pm and 4am because it's down for repairs. EVERY DAY.
They also created our schedules and uploaded them, but they were all wrong. So they took them offline for a couple weeks to fix them.

if you live in the states then getting a student loan is really easy and the govt is really good about them. they make it 100% possible to get thru school without any money. plus most schools, if you have good grades, will also help you out.
