I hate Jay Peak. Not the Mountain, the Resort. This is my fourth year working at Jay, and what have I gotten out of it? Lousy pay and bruised shins.
I have worked as a ski instructor for the past 6 years of my 17 year lifespan. I started to work at Jay 4 years ago because i fell in love with the snow. Although ski instructing might possibly be the worst job ever, I was still able to get paid $7.00 an hour to ski (on a bunny slope!) I was only allowed to teach kids 7 and under. I mostly took out the 3-5 year olds because i was good with kids that age, even when the kicked me in the shins with their ski boots on. Then i got into freestyle skiing, got my first twin tips, and wanted to ride park. I knew Jay had an aweful park, because the only rails to learn on were 4 feet high pieces of steel. So i opted for the jumps. Now after going to competitions around VT, i realize that Jay's Park is so shitty, it's uncomparable. So this summer, I asked my boss if I could switch departments, go from ski teaching to park crew, since we desperatly needed one. Jay has one person maintain the park, he quit last year, leaving the position available. My boss agreed that i could maintain the park this year. So when i went to work this past saturday at 9:45am, my boss freaks out. Apparently i was supposed to still be ski instructing. (instructors are required to be there at 8:30am-i was very late). Now i was slightly upset by the fact that he wanted me to be in ski school, but i followed my orders and went to the clinics (for those of you who don't know, instructors are supposed to have 4 days of clinics before they are allowed to work) . Later that day i asked my boss why i was still in ski school. He responded, "because that's your place." Now this is the same boss that told me i could work in the park. When i went there last saturday, i wanted to set up the mailbx and have Dave (the groomer) set up a small jump. So there WAS work for me to do, but NOOOOO, i have to work in ski school!
Anyway, to keep the stroy moving, I rode up the lift with my boss and he tried to explain why he wanted me in ski school and not in the park. He said i was not needed in the park and that the park is fine as it is....WHAT FUCKING PARK??? There is one rail set up, and the only reason its set up is because i pulled it out of the woods and set it up myself!!!
He then continued to say that if i wanted to be in the park, i could teach kids freestlye...WOW!!! thatll be good, lets teach a 13 year old to slide a rail that is 4 feet high!!! I tried to tell my boss that we need more rails (esp boxes) to teach anything....he then threaten, "if you ever talk that way to me again then you will never work for this mountain again."
Jay peak is run by a bunch of old timers that dont even know what a park is, let alone a rail. They refuse to even consider the fact that having a better park would increase there sales by sooooo much...I mean how many of you in hear know people (even yourselves) that would ride jay more if they had a decent park?
So after being threatened to lose my job, i shut up for the rest of the weekend. I am now looking for a new job at any location.
Fuck Jay Peak. I love the snow, but i hate the people that tell you how to ski it.
