Please tell me about binding positions! Someone who knows!

Ok, there's loads of talk about binding position! I've never set bindings anywhere other than recommended centre line. Mainly cos I trust the people who make them! What are the advantages of setting them back from this line?
Something I wrote from a previous thread:-
"Freestyle skis are shaped totally differently from piste skis. Mounting them far behind centre point, (The apex of the curve) Would ruin their carve pattern! They are designed to have the binding set at the recommended centre line to provide optimum carve! The only reason to set them back would be if you are in soft powder snow, when exact carving becomes less poignent to give extra float! Surely! Please, someone who knows his onions reply to this! I need clarification!"
Any thoughts!

Factory recommended centre line. The one marked on the ski!
Pretty bemused by it all! Was sure factory cenre line was best for everything as it is in the optimum place for each ski depending on its flex and sidecut pattern!

well what ski are you talking about?? usually, the line they have on there is far from the center.
those lines also usually represent a more "freeride" or "modern" position, meaning that they arent center so they are still good for all mountain, but not too far back as to have a small tail (which is bad).
however, sometimes even those lines are actually quite a ways back from center. If you are looking for great park performance, those lines dont matter; its usually time to take out the measuring tape and go around 3cm back from center to true center. Some companies have a whack ass default mounting location, ie K2. IF you didnt say anything, you would most likely get mounted at "mid sole" and you would hate life in the park. It all depends on what you're looking for. The lines work for many, but not all.

This all depends on the ski, the manufacturer and what you will be doing with it. Two examples:
My Chronics: I use these for park, rails and boxes, moguls, and days when there isn't a whole lot of powder. I have them mounted at recommended. As line made them as a park ski, recommended is close enough to the core center to be perfect for spinning and have a good tail but still perform on groomers.
My Guns: I use these for everything but rails and boxes, including BC kickers, as I want to keep the edges sharp for skiing hardpack and the occasional patch of ice. As the Gun is more of an "all mtn" ski in Salomons line, they have placed recommended farther back to allow the tips to float in pow. However, I want them mounted fairly close to center, as the ski spins better off jumps and has more tail for skiing and landing switch in pow. This means that I mounted them +4cm, and they seem perfect.
Again, it all depends on the ski, the manufacturer and what you will be doing with it. I suggest you consult your local knowledgable freeski shop, as they should point you in the right way. Or, you could post the ski you are mounting, and what you will be doing with it and we could help you. And stop using exclimation points.

depends what ur gonna do with them. if its gonna be mostly park, then center or about 1-2 cm back to bet a little better carving ski for more all-mountain. 1 or 2 cm back wont make the ski ride bad like the quote says, except when riding switch. remember the old black n white madtrix? rotating binding but twintip shape. that binding moved the stance backward and made it ride better
