Im not really sure waht it is exactly, but a lot of people really dislike how it gives the government the power to tap your phone line if they think you are a terrorist. Personally, I think it is good that they can tap your phone line if they think you are a terrorist.

patriot act allows government to jail people for a certain amount of time, for no reason other than them "looking suspicious". well, thats highly simplified.

The patriot act is seriously borderline fascist. I think it's funny how we go about the world trying to spread "freedom", while limiting ours here are home. "Homeland securtiy" is one of the biggest jokes going on right now in washington. It was created after 9/11 just to ease and calm the american public. This is honostly like the freaking cold war. Instead of the government convincing the american public that there is a communist under the bed, the have convinced everyone to check for arabs under the bed. Can you believe that people were buying plastic sheeting and duct tape to seal up their houses and stuff. People started making bomb shelters in their basements. If someone wants to kill me fine, but i'm not going to live my life in fear, acting like an idiot.

yeah it basically gives the goverment permission to moniture you w.out you knowing by spying, tapping lines, tapping, etc etc and retaining you on suspicious behavior. theres alot of other stuff too, but i havent gotten to that and well to be honest the way its written it sugar coats everything it kinda reminds me of that one book (spacing out of the name) where they have the word police and history erasors, eh anyone read that book?

One of my friends just had to do a debate about the patriot act, some of the stuff he told me was unbelievable. I guess it directly violates a few constitutional amendments, so I'm pretty sure there's something wrong there. That, and it's just the government encouraging racism, it's just horrible what the whole terrorist scare has created at home.

It's shitty man...there's always a group of people that are the "enemy". There will never be peace so long as there is ignorance.

Yep. It allows detaining citizens (and non-citizens) without a charge (up to 7 days, then they must be charged, accused of "suspicious activity", or deported). It also allows the abuse of searching without probable cause by lowering the standards for getting a search warrant.

Yeah, I believe you're referring to 1984 by George Orwell, in which case it's the Thought Police.
The Patriot Act, albeit intrusive and completely contradictory to the Constitution, is an effective way of monitoring suspected terrorists. Unfortunately, it also gives the government an insane level power--even more insane than the level of power and control they currently have.
Non-thinkers and the apathetic alike will praise the Patriot Act as the "right thing to do." How ironic that these same individuals rant about spreading freedom. People who chose to believe the government is a capable, honest, and effective entity think the Patriot Act is great. Why? Because they're under the impression that goverment wants to do something other than control them. But that's the fucking purpose of government--to regulate a supposedly otherwise chaotic society of incapables.
I'm not advocating anarchy, but we have come to peak in stupidity in this country. As you can see, our conservative leaders are being cooked by scandals at every corner (not that our the Democrats aren't guilty of the same shit, they're just not powerful enough [i.e. important enough] to get caught). The war is not supported. Social programs at home are failing. The economy, though briefly rebounding from an otherwise tremendous 3 year downfall, is complete shit because it's based on consumer goods not produced in this country and we lack domestic job creation. The conservative powerhouse that took over this country in 2000 is falling flat on it's face from poor decisions, greed, and irresponsibility and the Patriot Act remains just another exemple of their ill-advised actions.

I totally agree with you. When I go to the polls, I never find a candate I like 100%. I base my votes on which candidate is the least of a lying fucktard and has a shot at winning. I don't call myself a democrat, but I seem to be on the left side of the fence more than the right. If theres a republican running and I think he's the best guy running, I don't have a problem voting for him. But the past two presidential elections, I knew who the biggest fucktard was.

Yeah, they did a survey the other day of what top politicians would people like to see be president. Choices were Condi, Hilary, McCain, and two or three others. McCain was by far the winner (I forgot by how much but it was a lot). I'm voting for him if he runs. He's a fucktard too, but by far the most capable and rational amongst the bunch.
