Ski Patrol- what do you think.

I'm not involved in as much stuff (clubs, jobs, etc) as I was a few years ago and I think I should start doing something with a bigger commitment. I have the oportunity to try out for the Loveland Volunteer Ski Patrol this January. It is a large commitment- 24 weekend days a year, and it would really cut into my ski time with my friends...but it would be something important to be involved in, and I would be skiing a lot. Has anyone had experience patroling? What do you think?

if you are to make patroller more cool..its all good... If instead of bitching on poeple going in closed trails when there has been a dump, you go and say, alright, ill go with you, then you are to be a cool patroler! Go on!

I think its great I did it, and now im a patroller. I find it fun you get to ski most of the time and also help people. It deffanatly is a big commitment though. Also when learning the tobaganing we go to learn usefull stuff on how to do butters.

It takes a lot of time and you have to be into it and not half ass it. You'll probably have to get OEC certification which takes about 80 class room / training hours. I patrol and its a lot of fun. And if you do, dont let people duck ropes as the guy up there said. When trails are closed its for a good reason (avalanch saftey, groomers, workers on the trail ect.) We want runs open just like the public do. If you have the time, do it.

I loved being a patroller (but I was paid)...it also opened up other opportunities. Depending on where you would be working/volunteering, you actually ski quite a bit.

Yeah I wouldn't be getting paid, but there are a ton of perks. (Free season passes and stuff) It also looks good on a resume just because of the commitment.

My buddy just started doing that at Whislter. Same deal 24 weekend days. He is volunteer and gets a free pass. But since the studnet passes are so cheap it works out to $16 a day. But anyways hes doing it cause he wants to get into med school I think, but hes having a good time, hes one of the youngest patrollers. Only thing sucks is hes out of the house at like 7:15 the night before, and when you've been partying last night its a rude wake up call...

I got nothin' but love for the ski patrol. I get a free season pass every year because my dad patrols. He's a re-born skier which is tight because he sees skiing from my point of view...the reason he started again had a lot to do with me being so into newschool, so he looks at us like we're saving skiing, which definitely helps newschoolers and snowboarders alike, especially considering how many patrollers are ignorant to the movement. I'll never join the patrol anytime soon but I'd encourage any newschooler to join just for the sake of having one more person in a figure of "authority" on our side.

dont be one of the asshole ones like the 1 that almost clipped my season pass the other day for being on a closed trail when theres only 7 open trails on the mountain so far..instead of taking my pass he made me have a 20 minute conference with his dick head boss

alot of the patrols at loveland mono board. and as long as you wont get all pissed at people in the closed stuff and wont stop them for skiing fast and stuff its cool. but is also more fun to ski with your friends

been there, done that. the oec's a bitch, long and hard, but its really pretty chill in retrospect. also, youre first yr will be all shadows where u get bitched slapped around, in the first aid room and doing work projects around the mtn., but once u get the jacket, its pretty kick ass. just dont half ass ur shit and stay on the big dog's good side and everything is fine.
oh yea, the toboggan training was the best fun. basically u just ski around with ur buddy in a toboggan wherever u want. that was worth the oec 4 sur.

I have found ski patrol to very cool. When i got a concussion they sent me a card hoping that i was feeling better. I mean, yea they can be jerks when i do something that i shouldn't. But most of the time I bring that on myself.

i think maybe you guys should understand that when patrollers dont let you onto trails, it is nearly always for legitimate reasons. they dont do it because they like not letting you ski where you want, they do it for your safety. all patrollers are really doing you a big favor.

That they are...they X the shit out of anything that sticks out of the snow...and we don't have a park, so there is nothing to jump off of. I know it's a safety thing, but I've never seen a mountain cross off more things.

I'm taking an EMT class right now, I'm planning on taking a year off before grad school and doing ski patrol in tahoe. I'd say it's my dream job, though you don't make all that much.

I hate ski patrol. Only had bad experiences with them.
Like when I was working as a chair lift operator for my mountain I had to repair a fence that had been destroyed by other people.
The temperature outside was like minus 30 Celsius and I had to repair the damn thing bare hands because I couldnt do shit with my gloves. Anyway, it took me like 30-45 min to fix it just enough time to get my hands froze and get me pissed off.
So after my work I decided to go skiing with a friend. So as I was getting in line to he chair lift I got under the fence to catch my friend who was ahead of me. A ski patrol that saw me came by and being the jerk ski patrol he was told me to get the fuck out of the line and to be careful with the fence and that if I had broken it I wouldnt be the one to fix it...So I told him "fuck yeah it'll be me but it sure wont be you". Shut the ski patrol right off. Anyway, yeah ski patrols are jerks.

I like ski patrol. They've saved my ass a couple times. Like when I broke my femur, yeah, patrol rocks.
And if you're poaching and just own up to it they're usually pretty chill. I dumped out of the woods and a patroller came up and asked if I'd ducked a rope, I was like "Well...... Yeah, the snow was sick." And he lectured me for a min and said don't do it again. Pretty chill about it though.
Love your ski patrol. They save people.
