we're getting real close to an attack on iraq and if north korea invades south korea then we are gonna take them out too. its gonna be pretty crazy and its about time US takes action. because of us we may not have to live in fear some day down the road. and have no doubt about a two fronted war...the us is totally capable of defeating iraq and north korea at the same time. the deal is that we are going to get in there (iraq and possibly n korea) and use tactics such as surgical bombing in order to lesson the amount of civilian casualties. and if iraq does attempt to hit us with a bioweapon or a nuke then guess what...iraq is gonna be wiped off the map cause we are gonna nuke them off the planet. USA all the way.

Hmm... whoever made the comment about my liberal comment, I think I should change that to American liberals. Socialized medicine works alright (I'm still not a fan) when you don't have to cater to cities full of ghettos. I go to a predominantly school full of RICH liberal kids, and I'm the middle class conservative. I've actually heard kids in sociology here say that the problem w/ welfare is that we don't give these people enough money. Conservatives do have social consciences, they just realize that shit needs to get done, and you can't always do it in the most 'social conscience' way.

yeah man I wasn't actually saying that - just trying to show that there are liberals that act a certain way (like the dudes in your school) and republicans that act a certain way as well. Most liberals are going to critisize a republican governments and the other way around. I would agree with cutting the amount of people that recieve welfare and increasing the amount that some people recieve. that's not necesarily a liberal vs. republican question - it's more of a social justice question. Likewise the war isn't a liberal or republican debate althought many people think it is. it's weather or not you can attack a country without PROOF or not(I wrote stuff on that in the other thread so I won't again). And because it's being done by a republican more republicans will side with bush, more liberals will be against it. Even though it really has nothing to do with political standing and more about what you think is right and wrong.

the taliban wasn't a threat, al-quaeda was. and lots of people thought they were the greatest threat this country faced. Namely the Clinton administration. This knowledge was passed on to the Bush administration but they ignored it. North Korea appears to be the greater threat, yet because of bush's personal vendetta, or oil, or whatever, we are going to wage a full scale war on them, with evidence or not. North Korea is not a 'crisis' in the view of this administration, even though they already have nuclear weapons, are dropping out of the NPT, have a crazy dictator like saddam that starves his own people. yet we can still talk this one out, while we need to attack Iraq.

Look North Korea is a worthless country. What would China have to gain by keeping them as an ally. Even if the Chinese supported the Americans and the Americans let up then they would only lose face to countries that support N. Korea...and who gives a shit about them anyway. The N. Korean president/dictator is just looking for money, cause his country is broke and can't feed its own people after spending money on this weapons program. He needs to get something for his investment.

Man, calling North Korea worthless is stupid. It'd be like calling Belgium worthless because they haven't been in the news that much lately. They have political worth, and now they have nukes.

And Tim. I highly doubt that the US and China will go to war, the two countries are much closer than most people think. I believe China holds Most Favored Nation status in trading with the United States, and without the United States and its allies, China would be depraved of food (as they buy a HUGE chunk of our grain exports, and we all know about their overpopulation/starvation problems) and petroleum. As a large chunk of the oil going to their country flows from the US and its allies.

Sure China gets a lot of it's grain and petrol from the USA, so bloody what? They could just as easily get it from somewhere else. China gets fuel from 'US allies' but that doesn't mean for a second that those 'allies' wouldn't sell oil to China just because they fell out with the USA. Seeing as a lot of those countries hate america as it is, you really think they're gonna choose political friendliness over money? Grow up.

And you are being very vein by saying that the US is THAT much better than North Korea... look at it this way. Both North Korea and China are run on the same 'Little Red Book'... They both have similar interests, and North Korea has nukes... do we know if China has nukes for sure? If they do not, I'm sure North Korea is more willing to share its nuclear technology with China than the US would be. Hell... Doesn't China already have a functioning ICBM system? What would happen if Korea and China combined their nuclear programs. Instead of one country with nukes with no feasible means of delivery, and one country with a feasible means of delivery, but no nukes, you'd have two countries with a nuclear force.

Thats one reason why China might want to join w/ North Korea. Besides the facts that they might want to protect some interests of theirs in that region.

You say they are joined by the little red book and nothing could be farther from the truth. China is moving closer and closer to a free market every day. Although the Chinese government may still be consitered communist, it is nothing like the totalitarian dictatorship in North Korea, and it doesn't want to be associated with one. China knows that if it can join the United States as a major economic partner it will become relatively prosperous when compared to North Korea or the China of 20-30 years ago. Once again, North Korea has no real value for China. The fact the the North Koreans are developing nuclear weapons does not help China at all, in fact China is worried that if N. Korea can have them than Japan can too, and worse still, Taiwan.

The physical and political condition of the North Korean people is worse than at any time in their history.

KEY FINDINGS

At least one million North Koreans have died of starvation in the last five years. While the government blames the food shortage on a variety of natural disasters, the reality is that the primary cause of the food shortage is the policies of the North Korean government. Without agricultural and economic reform, U.S. assistance will only be able to slow the loss of life.

North Korea has the worst human rights record of any government currently in power. The government has divided the general population into three classes and 51 subgroups. One third of the population, or at least seven million people, are classified as 'hostile' by their own government. It is likely that international assistance intended for this group is diverted to more privileged classes.

North Korea is the only country that has attempted to withdraw from the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), or to imprison children for the crime of being hungry and away from home.
The survival of the regime is paramount. The North Korean government relies on the military for support and maintains high levels of international tension to ensure loyalty. The survival of the regime depends on keeping the Korean people isolated and ill-informed on developments in the outside world. The celebration of Kim Jong Il's 57th birthday alone cost $90 million, while many in the country starved.

North Korea has found that concessions from the United States are easier to win if the North Korean leadership presents a threatening, irrational, and unpredictable image to the outside world.

What does that have to do with anything? China doesn't care how N. Korea treats its populace. Hell, look at how China treats their populace. Sure its better than before, but its still not up to par with most nations. Again, if China is worried that Taiwan or Japan were to get nukes, then it gives them all the more reason to aquire nuclear technology. Haven't you ever heard that the best deterrant against nuclear war is either no nukes, or lots of nukes on either side. If one side is afraid of retaliation, than they won't start the war for fear of the consequences. This is why the US's nuclear arsenal is labeled as the 'Nuclear Deterrent' ( i know I can't spell, heh)... We don't go out looking to nuke people, like some... *cough* TIM *cough* people think. The nukes are there mostly as show.

In the 'Great Book Of Warfare' the favored responce to one weapon of mass destruction is a weapon of mass destruction. So don't give me shit about 'Oooh, but Andy! Iraq doesn't have nukes!' Because any weapon of mass destruction would be the same as a nuke attack in the minds of the leaders.

So perhaps China wants nukes as a defense measure.

i have no idea what your talking about andy...it doesnt make any sense. China already has nuclear weapons. The problem with North Korea, at least in the eyes of most people, is that money that could have been spent on feeding the people was instead diverted to an enormous military budget (1/3 of their GNP). It has the 5th largest army in the world...and its controlled by a (crazy) totalitarian dictator who thinks he knows everything (such as how to optimize potatoe harvests) but all his domestic plans fail (only 10% of the potatoes planted could be harvested). He therefore focuses on maintaining power through a strong alegiance sic to the army, to which he devotes most of the country's resources. He is now looking to use the nuclear weapons as bargaining chips because he has no more allies and his people would revolt if they weren't held down by the military.
Korea has already sold plenty of weapons to countries hostile to the US and runs a complex counterfeiting operation that produces American currency (this was one of the reasons the treasury chose to update the design of bills). In addition, it produces drugs that are smuggled into other countries in diplomatic bags (not subject to customs searches).
Another danger is the possiblity that extreme nationalists would seize control of the government and immediately attack South Korea (and the US troops stationed there) with nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons. Why not take a stand now rather than have the world 'held hostage' once the N. Koreans develop long-range missles that can strike europe and the united states.
All in all, North Korea should not be allowed to develop these weapons, as its irrational ruler and general political instability could result in a greater and more costly conflict later.
