Dude, Mahre comes from a family of Olympians. There's never been a day when your "caliber of skiing was at the same level." It's great that you accuse him of playing the "pro skier card" and then you immediately start talking about how sick of a skier you used to be. Isn't it you that is being hypocritical? Think about it like this:
1. Andy could ski circles around you on any feature of the mountain, forward or backwards, poles or no poles. Maybe you've got him beat on the traverses, but that's it.
2. He has an opinions which he has voiced repeatedly. You're not the only one who disagrees with him (on the pole issue), in fact, most people do. However, he feels passionately enough about it that he is willing to be criticized by the majority of the ski world. You can say he's a hypocrit when it comes to what's "progressive", but I can't believe that it means so much to you. I won't be dropping my poles anytime soon, but it doesn't bother me that he is.
Why doesn't he use poles? Because they aren't necessary. Why doesn't he like 1 footers? Because he doesn't want our sport to follow rollerblading. It seems pretty clear to me, yet you have such a hard time with it.
Liam, for one I think you misinterpreted my thoughts on whether or not no poles is a good thing. I really couldnt care less because, like said, I think the guy is a sick skier and that is not what the debate was about. Secondly, I was at one time quite a good skier and I hold true to what I said. Ive been on twins for longer than almost anyone doing it today. However, it is all clear now and I wish you fellas a good season and lots of snow, because, no there is no snow here. (as per PM from Andy)
yo i ski with poles, not only is it a great way to get around they're what steeze are made of. I skateboard and i thought long and hard about this... Skiing without poles is like skateboarding without arms.. u dont need them but you should have them... then again i dont want to offend any armless skateboarders cause it would be pretty cool to see but if you saw them frequently it would be weird
I feel that poles should be neccesary to a skier who skis the whole mountain. I, personnally. have always skied with poles my whole life, and without them I feel awekward and disoriented. I always pole plant while skiing moguls or on a fast groomer, I drag my poles slightly, not like it makes a difference in this situation. When someone skis powder you need poles, no questions asked there, but there are people who only ski in the park, and I have not expierienced that firts hand because my hill does not have a park. I am able to see how poles might be unneccesary to people like this but I feel that they still need poles, and unless you're really good it looks awekward.
Mittens....I ski with poles and without poles...but always in a one piece...who cares what people think...im tryin to be a better skier. Skiing without poles helps you with balance so much. So moral of the story is, ski how YOU want....if you can throw down, people will give you mad respect whether you have sticks in ur hands or not.
this thread has been another wonderful example of why newschoolers sucks balls and is contributing to the downfall of our sport. instead of trying to push the sport together we're bitching about poles. for christs sake...
poles are an extention of the arm. I find they do help with turning because i can feel the ground around me and stuff. Its quite hard to explain actually.
do you guys know what looks really cool? when you are bombing down the hill with your hands on your knees very similar to a snowblader, or when your in the air any your arms are flailing around in the air. All because there are no poles when you use them. Thats so cool.
hahaha with that said ill say wrecks look so much fuinnier with poles cause one will just shoot out of the snow cloud that once was an upright skiier hahah
although it does make regaining you composure after yardsales a little harder cause you gotta fetch 'em ... espeially in powder when its liek a foot away from you and you ant get over/through the powder to it lol
id say dont ski with poles but never ski without them
Well i strictly dont use poles in the park its just easier to spin and do grabs but poles for some reason i can go faster and turn way easier when the terrain is harderÂ
