You two don't have a clue. The Gamecube has 100x the graphics of PS2, it's run on a custom ATi chipset for graphics. Have you ever seen Resident Evil 0, or Metroid Prime? I HATE x 1million PS2 Fanboys.

The graphic capabilities of Gamecube aren't any more capable than those of PS2. PS2 has too sources of processing power: the CPU, and the 2 vector unit chips. Up until now these Vector chips haven't even really been used. Correct implementation can cause a 20 to 100% decrease in the processing of the CPU... you could have the full environment, and the CPU only be working at 1%!!!! Developers *not sony) also say that in a full textured and lighted environment the PS2 pushes 20 million polygons per second. Gamecube won't even throw numbers around.

That's incorrect. Currently, the Xbox has the best graphics capibilities, followed by the Gamecube with the PS2 taking up the rear. Think about it logically for a second before you look at the numbers, The PS2 is the most dated of the 3 consoles. The gamecube is over a year newer, almost two. In almost two years, technology is outdated pretty fast.

CPU speeds:
Xbox - 733MHZ
GC - 485MHZ
PS2 - 266MHZ

Graphics chips are a bit harder to compare with a direct comparision. There are more variables than when comparing the CPU speeds. However, they still can be compared. Again, the xbox has the best graphics chip, followed by the Gamecube with the PS2 taking up the rear.

I am trying to be as unbiased as possible, not supporting any particular console. Technically speaking, the PS2 is the inferior console. This doesn't necessarily make it the worst console, it all comes down to games. Every system has great games, I am a fan of the GC's games. Metroid prime is amazing. It's all personal preference, some games may be great for one person and terrible for another.

I made a small mistake the PS2 is listed as having a CPU speed of 294.912 MHZ. The other two speed values are correct.

Oh and youneedmorelumber, the games aren't on a mini-disc, they are on a Mini-DVD. They have done this two prevent piracy. The disc also spins 'backwards' from a DVD for the same reason.

yeah the game cube graphics are so sick, resident evil 0 has the best graphics ive ever seen in a game, everything is so real too, like the dudes handcuffs dangle when he isnt moving and you can see your reflection in everything and everything looks so sick adn real and gamecube is sick, a crap load better than ps2 for graphics, it doesnt matter what the capabilities are it matters how it looks, and gamecube looks sick

Yes, you can. Read what I said. The gamecube uses Mini-DVDs. Not DVDs like the PS2 and Xbox, which can have problems with piracy. The gamecube doesn't have these problems.

I have to add one thing to his argument.

The processor types are different.

Gamecube's 'Gecko' is a RISC based processor running at 485mhz, this, while not as powerful as the Xbox's x86 based Intel processor, this does not effect anything as much as it should, as the FSB runs at 162mhz vs the Xbox's 133mhz. And we know that the processor speed shouldn't matter as much as long as there are no bottlenecks in the rest of the system.

Gamecube's GPU (the graphics chip) is made by ATi, and is on par with Xbox's NV2A chip produced by nVIDIA. The ATi GPU is slightly less powerful and the T+L engine in it leaves a bit to be desired, but there isnt much difference between the Xbox GPU and the Gamecube GPU. PS2 does not have a seperate GPU. PS2 has ONE chip... and this one chip is pretty much underpowered. It runs on a RISC processor. But is otherwise tough to program for. The Xbox's x86 processor is the same as PC procs, and the Gamecube even running a RISC proc is very easy to program for due to the tools released by Nintendo.

The truth is, PS2 is LEAGUES behind Xbox and GC in terms of power, ease to program for, and graphics. However PS2 has more of a 'fanboy' following, judging from the other posts. The big thing that has me against PS2 is that a lot of the developers develop games for the system without optimizing them FOR that system (perhaps thinking they will port them to the other systems later) which cause framerate loss, stuttering, and general slowdown. This is evident in a lot of the sports games released for the PS2.

haha... I just read your post gravteck. You're talking like 20million poly's per second is a huge feat. My Radeon9000pro puts out 22mill/second in 3dmark with everything running in the backround. AND at 1024x768 resolution. The Gamecube can also use higherresolutions like that, while the ps2 is limited to approx 720x480. And you're talking like pure hardware T&L is a HUGE advancement. Like ATi has never heard of it? HAH!

I wanted to bring some numbers into the argument. However I've noticed that every PS2 spec page lumps the emotion engine and grraphics stuff together. If you actually thing that a little 300mhz (the Ps2 chip) CPU can actually put out 6.2 billion floating point operations itself, you're sorely mistaken. They are combining everything together. If I were to do the exact same thing for the gamecube, we'd get 10.5 GFlops/s :-0... PWNED.

Yes, Andy, that is exactly correct. Essentially, the GPU's for the Xbox and Gamecube are made by different companies, both leaders in the Field. The GC uses an ATI, and the Xbox uses a Geforce. They are very close performance wise although the Xbox is still only slightly better in that respect.

As for the Processers, the Gamecube runs a faster FSB than the Xbox as Andy has stated. This means the two are again, relatively close in speed, with the Xbox still the leader of the two. However, the PS2 has even lower FSB than the Xbox, widening the gap between the systems in the other direction. It really does fall quite far behind in this respect.

Again, this is just the specs, it all comes down to games. Alot of Xbox's exclusive title's are being ported to PC making them no longer exclusive, this includes Halo, Splinter Cell, etc. Also, some of its once exclusive title's are availible on other consoles now, such as Dead to Rights (availible on both GC & PS2). Xbox still has several great exclusive titles, such as Mech Assualt, Dead or Alive 3 and Amped.

PS2 has many of their exclusives ported or being ported to the PC. This includes GTA3, Vice City, MGS 2. Again, many titles are still only availible on the system, such as Grand Turismo 3 and Final Fantasy X. Although, the rights to Final Fantasy games are now owned by Nintendo, and the next game will be on GC.

GC typically doesn't allow it's exclusives to be ported to other consoles or the PC. Some good exclusives include Metroid, Resident Evil 0, Super Smash Bros. Melee.

All systems have great games, so anyone is a great decision.

Another thing to consider is DVD drives. The PS2 and Xbox can both play DVDs, with the addition of a remote. The Gamecube cannot, unless you count the Panasonic Q, only availible in Japan and very Expensive. None of the consoles are very adept at playing DVDs, some don't even work.

If cost is a factor, The Xbox & PS2 are approx $299 CDN. Right now, you can get the Xbox with 2 games, an extra controller and a memory card for no extra cost. The Gamecube is cheaper than both other systems by approx $100 CDN.
