There are a million articles about the soul of skiing. Is it being lost? Is it more abundant now than ever before? What is the cause of either of these scenarios?
In my personal oppinion, people take themselves too seriously a lot of the time. It's way too easy to get wrapped up in trying to become something or trying to do something. The only motivation for this that I could dig out was that there would be some sort of happiness by becoming 'pro'. But if your motivations are purely to become 'pro' than whenever it happens I'm sure it will certainly fall short of your expectations. The best skiers in the world wouldn't be the best for long if their motivations to keep pushing didn't have to do with loving what they are doing and loving being on the mountain. Why is there a need to try to be something? just be who you are and do what you enjoy.
Why does what someone is doing or what someone else is saying have to be a concern? It shouldn't be. This is where the 'soul' is being lost. These are the people, that no matter what their level of success, will always fall short of their dreams. These are the kids that flip out and start a fight with the new guy that cut them off (ive certainly been that guy, its a waste of your energy), these are the kids that come on here and dis people that are pro only because they think they are better than them and that they should be the person getting paid to ski. Well, heres a newsflash. No matter how good someone is, if they are getting paid its for a reason.
Heres something to think about. Where does all the anger come from? Do you remember when you first started skiing and you could make parallel turns or when you skied that run you had never skied before? How about your first 360? Those days you were invincible, no one could bring you down. You were in touch with the true reason you started skiing, pure enjoyment. No one could ruin that day. No single gorby could cut you off and put you in a bad mood. So where does that love go? it's still there, just look.
Those are where I see the loss of soul. But in more abundance I see a mountain full of happy faces. When I go up the mountain, I see the same kids everyday whether its crappy out or not they are there because there is nothing they would rather be doing no matter how bad out it is. Whether they become pro or not, they love everyday. Those are the people that when they do become pro succeed to the highest level.
So since when did image and attitude become part of the reason why you ski? dont let it. enjoy the day.

By the way, I totally agree with your article. I would have to say that when I'm skiing and having the most fun, it's when I'm learning something new or being with my friends.
And who else agrees that Detective's articles are most of the time better than what the editors of ski magazines put out in their introduction or conclusion to issues. You should go for a job if the you get sick of being pro. Haha.

That IS true... but look at all these other sports where image has become a big factor. It's not just skiing. But you are right that it really shouldn't happen and taht people should just do it because it's fun. To some its a hobby, to others it's a lifestyle. To most of us here on this site...it is most likely our favorite sport and probably favorite thing to do...thing we most look forward to in summer, etc... Although i do see many happy faces every day- i do see some of the kids who are pretty much pros or real close to pros that are all about being teh best and throw their equipment if they dont slide a rail or leave the mtn. cuz they can't land their switch misty 9's that certain day or whatever. There IS that group, and they will pay the price. Us who just do it cuz we love it...will have 100x more fun as these 'trying to be pros'...even though we all think that the life of a pro would be so sick, i think just skiin with ur buds every weekend or whatever is the best way. So sometimes stardom isn't always the best life. Once again, they will not be as happy as us, even though more successful. (with a few exceptions)

ah yes, same here fro-deo...when me and my friends are hiking a sick jump or a really fun rail we're always cheering each other on and whatever and having a good time and we're all learning new stuff and feeling good about it and actually happy for one another. That is the best part about skiing. Not just these good locals bombing down the park showing off or whatever.

hehe, i remeber the first 360 i stomped, they were called 'helis' back then and i did it with 2 feet o air and by throwing my arms. but i did it and i felt like i was on top of the world, first backflip gave me the same feeling, i greased my first rail going on fakie the other day it was prolly my tenth attempt and damn it felt good.
i love that feeling and im gonna keep pushing myself to do new stuff so i can attain that feeling once again.
my intire crew waited for his ass at the bottem of the hill and beat the shit out of him. i broke his poles agianst a tree, and we snapped one of his skis. fucker got uppercutted so much. he was bleeding from his eyes and shit, crying like a little pussy. i busted out a body slam on his ass and broke both of his arms. the ski patroler broke up the fight and clipped all of our tickets. we where gonna beat the shit out of the patroller but my mom came to pick us up.

freestyla_01, why do you feel that you could never become a 'superstar'? I don't understand.
I believe that if you work hard enough and are consistant and take care of your body, than anyone is capable of becoming a pro.
That article was beautiful, my eyes are filled with tears. :)
You made a good point, I have been too concerned with becoming professional when I should be concerned about skiing because I love doing it and progressing because I want to get better.

ya I used to be like that, the only reson I went out skiing was because I wanted to become pro someday, and I worried what everyone thought about me and shit, now I just go out to have fun and I find that I end up progresing faster and i actully enjoy myself...

yea weather your first smooth 360 was yesterday or 10 years ago its all the same... everyone should look back to that day and remember what team there playing for.. there will never be a day that i have to take orders from a rep or team manager just to be in the spotlight... cuz that is when i will look back and remember who im riding for and it certainly wont be some sponsor that tells me that if i dont win the xgames they will drop me.... thats my 2 cents... so keep the ripping and progressing and hopefully the industry will change so you dont have to win the xgames to be noticed you just have to work hard, love what your doing and play your own game...peace

frestyla_01 - I try not to limit my skiing by saying that I will not ever be able to do things.
Do you remember your first day of skiing, did you ever think you would become as good as you are today?
Maybe you aren't throwing d-spin 900's, but who's to say that you won't be.
Just take each day for each day and you might end up surprising yourself and finding out you are capable of far more than you ever imagined.

Some people don't even want to hit a table or try a new trick..they just force themselves because they have to get that much closer to sponsorship. That's bullshit. You get sponsord by going out there and being exceptionally good and doing what you do every day, having fun on skis.
Skiing is fun...keep it that way.

Yesterday (Boxing Day) I was out at my local hill where I've been a member for approx 13 years.... And we had like 4 full chairs of people, from years past shreddin'. It was like the good old days, totally the reason I ever rode the snow..... Everyone stoked to be out there pushing each other and having fun. Enjoy it all while you can....

read the article in the latest axis mag, it has a good section on the soul of skiing, the jist of it is that if your having fun doing what your doing don't mess with a good thing, I'm all about skiing, its what I do, everyone knows that, but when I'm out skiing I don't take myself seriously, I work on my tricks for personal goals... thats just my take on it
