BOREAL SHOULD NOT BE OPEN!!

first off its not safe 700 people for one little lift and a patch of snow, literally, if you do decide to wait in line for the chair it stops ever 2 seconds because of all the beginners that opening weekend brings, and if you just want to hike you still have to pay, that’s right there charging people to hike, I’ve never heard of such a thing before, but lets say you pay so you can hike and you get up there and wait in a line just a big as the lift line to hit a box, lame. I’ve never seen so much security to stop people from hiking who don't have tickets. there’s a guy on a 4-wheeler not a snowmobile chasing people down who are trying to hike Oh you know the rumor that your alpine pass works at boreal before alpine opens, its just that a rumor, they said that in order for someone to use their alpine pass boreal has to be 100% open, that means every lift has to be running before alpine opens one lift which is not going to happen.
Boreal is open for 1 reason to say that they were the fist, which is retarded, I used to think boreal was cool and had a good vibe but opening with a little patch of snow come on. I bet heavenly has more snow than them but they don't open until they have a decent amount of terrain open.
your probably saying its better than nothing or its better than that other resort that’s not open but its not They should not be open, yea, have the boxes set up for people who want to come hike but advertising that "there open for the season" pretty sad. all that does is bring hundreds of people up to try and dodge each other. I can't believe that that people are actually paying money for it.

I dont make those descions..I just try to make the best of what I'm told we have to do to be open by a certain date.
I DID warn everyone on this board not to expect much.
I've always kept newschoolers informed to whats going on WITHOUT the associated marketing hype or spin.
My crew is doing their best considering the conditions or lack there of. We could just pull the boxes and wait for more snow but that would piss people off as well. you can't always please everyone all of the time..especially right now with a lack of snow and everyone's pent up lack of shredding frustrations. We were trying to fill in the landings today but some kids would swear at us for being in the way or just run over our shovels and rakes...so we quit.
And just so you know Boreal never permits hiking. And with it so crowded hiking just adds to the problem. As to the ALpine pass situtation, that a marketing question..I dont have an answer for you. And just so you know..that lttile patch of snow that we have cost a small fortune to make in light of the dismal snowmaking temps we have been experiencing..close to 6 figures in electricity and diesel fuel. So yeah..everyone has to have a ticket.

i know its not up to you, i know your working hard it just seems like there open right now to say that they are the first i'm sure other resorts could put that much snow on a hill and open but they don't, seems like there going to reach fire code limit with the amount of people they have there for how much snow there is, that was a joke, but you know what i'm sayin why open? its cheezy to open with that amount of snow so they can say that their the first to open.
now there might be other reasons, i don't know what boreal's financial situation is and maybe they need every penny they can get their hands on to keep spraying snow cuz its so expensive, but its seems to me that their just doing it for braggin rights which is lame. they advertise everywhere "once again were the first to open"

just to make things clear i'm not blaming eric at all, i'm ranting and raving about the decision makers at boreal, i think eric has done a fine job with what hes been given. maybe someone from managment or form markiting can explain why they are open.

I cant go into the specific details but the descion was financial. In a nut shell we were scheduled to open 10/31..we didn't make that target. Even though there was budget for things like lifties, snowmakers, electricity etc, if there isn't any money coming in(ie..lift tickets)then it gets to a piont where theres no more money to spend on the things we need to get open and expand terrain. Also, we've spend over 700k on new stuff for the park in the last 4 months. Opening had little to do with being the first considering the circumstances. The larger resorts(the ones with Villages, resturants, shoppes and turist trap amenities) have a much great potential to make back there investment later in the season than we do. Plus we've already lost almost 20% of our season(10/31/05 to 4/11/06).
I feel your pain though. I would have prefered to hold back a bit more but there are bills to pay. And the longer we hold back the longer it will take to get the All Mtn Park up in full swing with my full staff.. 90% of which are sitting at home with no work and bills of their own to pay.
I a normal year we would have opened with similar conditions but in OCTOBER. The pent up shredding frustrations would be alot less at that time and the crowds not as nearly as bad. The later opening dates of all of Tahoe have really got alot of people on edge for lack of snow..just makes the how situtation worst. Just hang in there and it will get beter by the day at Boreal and the rest of Tahoe should be open by the weekend.

well crap, i guess opening so they can keep making snow for us makes sence, everyone should go buy a lift ticket and a fatty lunch with some beer at boreal so then can keep spraying snow.
I bet they could cut down on some costs by not having an army of security keeping people out.
anyways snow dammit.

It was packed there today, but I like that they are open. If they did not stop the people from hiking nobody would have even bought a ticket tiday.
On a second note, are they really staying open all week?

whats 20 bucks for a jib session anyways?
Its like this opening day everywhere, everytime. Midwest, west, eastcoast....there is always one resort that opens a white ribbon first, and its always tense and stressful waiting in life to hit the one or two jibs they have.
If you dont like dont go, but at least some people got to put there new equipment on the white stuff instead of looking at it in there closet.
Boreal is only open to april 11? Isnt alpine open till "late may"?

ya it has to do with money matters again..the flow of people to boreal really dissipates towards april, considering all or 90% of Boreals crowd is gaper fest, people like that dont even use snow and april in the same sentence.
Think about when ur in the bay area and you tell someone in like the middle of may that your going skiing that weekend, they're like, What their is still snow, and you being the hip non gaper you are get all worked up and pissed that they dont even realze that there is still snow. Get it?

i'm sure it costs barely anything to have someone romping around to make sure people have tickets on the little 4 wheeler. That said, they have every right to make sure the business can stay afloat no matter what they have to do. Always remember that skiing is a business just as much as it is the most beautiful thing to happen since my grandma got castrated in '62.

^ I really dont know where you think that you can be angry with something your buying? I mean your the one buying the ticket, you can see exactly what you are getting right from the ticket lien. If you dont like it fucking leave. But I was glad that they were open and so were many other people even though it was a sub par session. it was fucking skiing.

Had a great time out there on sat., thanks for putting stuff out. I would do that every day, even with the cratered out transitions of death. Don't complain man, just smile and ski. Not saying you're a newb (cuz I am, only 2nd year), but there were no fewer than 5 sponsored skiers out there, chillin' with me and my newb friends. about 2 o'clock we were just hittin' a little 8' flatty and having a blast. it's all in your attitude (and there was plenty of that out there, right nick?).....

We added both c-boxes..going both ways.
Also moved the flat/down and flat box up the run to the brakeover so they both have actual landings now. We'll add some more stuff tonight..dont know what yet until we actually start moving more snow around. Also going to start having more of my park staff on duty as the days progress. BUT...BUT...with the amount of riders hitting the features we can only do so much by hand. We can keep the takeoffs going strong but the landings get to a point rather quickly in these conditions that only a snowcat can fix them. As we add more features and spread out the riders it will get better..and get more snow it will be better..and get more of the staff going it will get better..IT WILL ONLY GET BETTER!
Thanks to everyone who was patinent today while we were fixing things up..no foul-mouth atitudes or people barging past us while we were working like yesterday.
later skaters

Nice, more boxes. just spreading out the riders more would help, it was the crowd of 50 at the flat down box that really got me. and no respect.

He ain't no forecaster. It all depends on how much snow we actually get.

Im quite sure a hill that small can make enough snow to cover a run top to bottom in only two or three nights of cold, or at least here in the midwest they can. So I would say hope for cold nights along with the snow.

can anyone clear up the alpine pass situation? so if i get it right, since they are charging a reduced ticket at boreal right now we can't use our alpine pass? i can understand that from a financial standpoint. but i just want to know, so i be prepared and bring the 20. and eric, if you know, how many lifts and how much snow before they start charging full price. id gladly pay the 20 considering its after thanksgiving and they are the only resort open. sometimes you gotta bite the bullet. its not boreals fault or any other resort that there is no snow. they did what they could. eric has done his job. he set a box up early before they opened for us to hike. and it was only incosiderate people that caused it to be taken down. so if you don't think its worth it then dont go. yea it sucks, we bought that pass and we still might have to pay and there is a huge tourist crowd but ohh well. all we can do is hope we get dumped on this week. soon we will be riding deep snow, and hopefully resorts can stay open till early summer like last year!

yeah, I heard they are now letting Alpine Passes on the hill. Call 426 3666 to be sure.
If this storm plays out as advertized we could have the top open for friday. We moved most of the snow guns to the upper mountain and as soon as the storm passes we'll fire them up at night. Right now they are only running during the day. With these windy snowy conditions its not worth(nor safe) to have the night crew come in.
