a complete xenon/hid (high intensity discharge) setup would require a retrofit of your oem headlights involving hid projectors, hid bulbs, ballasts, and correctly upgraded wiring. just in case you're thinking about it, those plug and play kits are crap and they're illegal.
3 of my friends have them and all they did was buy the bulbs, there fucken expensive, but all they did was plug em in where the old lights were and they worked fine, so i dont think you need to do any mods to do this upgrade, but the only bad thing about em is they tend to blow out kinda easy....
acoustikrage is right, to get the full out HIDs you have to change a lot. I just bought a 02 WRX wagon and didn't like the lights. I just bought new bulbs, PIAA SuperWhites. They cost me $106 CDN and are better than stock, which was already ok. And they are easy to install yourself.
For those of you who buy Xenon or HID bulbs for regular headlights they won't last long. They draw too much power and will blow up after a while. Also without getting the projectors, changing the wiring, and leveling, they won't ever work to their full potential.
Yea.. they are sooo annoying. Sure they make you see a little better, but I hate cars with them cause i get fucking blinded every time i see them, even if they are on low. I despise xenon headlights.
You've obviously never driven with proper Xenons. They aren't a little better, they are way better. Sure they are kinda annoying when you look at them, but are amazing to drive with.
plus, most of the ones that have pissed you off have probably been stupid people putting plug and play kits into their cars. hid bulbs were not designed to work with halogen reflectors found in most cars. halogen reflectors with hid bulbs fail to create a cutoff line and scatter the light, therefore creating hotspots and the glare you guys are complaining about. a proper retrofit or oem hid setup has minimal glare.
Every time some shithead ricer with those things is around, it fills me with rage because I can't see anything else in that direction. Why can't you xenon people just use regular headlights like the rest of us?
I've driven down every kind of road in the dark (fast) and I've never had a problem with the stock bulbs in my '95 legacy.
Just get new bubls, it is about 30 bucks a pair of goods ones. It will improve what you have now greatly. A full, capable HID kit will cost at least 500.
You're right ive never driven with xenon headlights, and thats because I would feel like a huge asshole. I personally would rather not blind people. I can see PERFECTLY fine with my regular stock headlights on my 1984 volvo. There is absolutely no need for xenon lights on any road. People who drive with them are selfish. People may disagree, but it's true. They care so little about fellow drivers that they are willing to hurt their eyes for an unnecessarily bright light.
whether hids are necessary or not is your opinion, but i certainly wouldn't go as far as to say people who drive with hids are assholes. hids have a clear advantage over halogens whether you like them or not. i, personally, have never been blinded or irritated by hid lights while driving.
i drive around w/ my brights on and i've not once been flashed. that's how shitty my lights are. hell, just a little bit ago i was driving home and i could see a partial shadow of my truck in front of me from the car lights behind me. personally i think people w/ their fog lights on all the time are gayer.
HIDs/Xenons that come on cars from the factory don't blind people. Unless its their high beams, but thats the same with any headlights. On the times where you might be cresting a hill and you get them in the eyes cause of the angle, well, thats too bad, but it doesn't happen very often. The ones that blind you are people who put the Xenon bulbs in regular headlights.
Plus, if everyone had them, it would seem like the norm and no one would be complaining.
