Replying to DVD ripping- DVD to avi or dvd to mpeg

Ok so now that ive sold my lyra media player, and havent gotten an archos yet. I need something to archive dvd's on my computer in the meantime.


Whats the best program for ripping a dvd stragiht from the dvd to either an mpeg file, or an avi file. perferably at a smaller resolution so as not to take up my entire harddrive space.


Free/purchase programs whatever someone has experience with give me a recomendation.
