Can somebody give me directions on how to wax skis?
umm, well lets seee, im not tooo sure about this, but i am guessing you would go to a "Ski" shop, or look in reliable racing, and don't get scared by that bad R word. they have 4 pages on waxes in the cataloge.
this is what you do:
1) take old wax off of skis
2) drip hot wax onto ski using iron
3) use iron, evenly distribute melted wax onto base
4) take off excess using a scraper.
get a shitty iron. melt some wax on ur skis and move the iron all over the bases to spread the wax. (dont keep it on one spot to long cause it will burn ur bases tho.) then let it dry and scrape it off with a scraper or a credit card works.
all this depends are your skis new or not cause if they are follow these steps first if not skip them.
take a scraper to them like a metal one then follow with a scotch brite pad then a bronze brush
okay for the waxing itself put your skis on something flat and depress the brake so it doesnt get in your way use like string or somethign and tie them down. then turn on your iron not so hot that the wax smokes when you touch it to the iron but just hot enough so that the wax melts. touch the wax to the iron and drip the wax all along the ski then put the iron on the ski and keep the iron moving if you dont you can ruin your skis smooth out all the wax so that the entire ski is covered with wax then let it cool while putting the wax on the other ski. then take a plastic scraper and scrap it all off so that you can see the wax anymore then scrape some more then after all that is done you take a nylon brush and brush it the full length of the ski and after that you are done
1. Wax-I typicaly go with all temp down to 0 degrees then i get into cold wax-most wax will have recomended temps on it but all temp works best- you can get wax at your local shop, dont shop online Support Your Local Shop
2. Make shure all the wax is off your skis(after a full day of skiing it shold be) use a scraper then rub at the skis with some finger nail polish remover and then you ready to wax
3.You'll need the wax a tie down and a scraper and oo yea an iron (w.e. i cant spell) let the iron heat up and then take the wax of choice and drip it down the ski, you dont need a whole lot unless you skis are huge, spead the dripped in wax with the iron until the wax seems evenly spread.
4.ALLOW WAX TO COOL before scraping (wax one ski,wax the other, then scrape the first, and so on.) dont take to much wax of scrape till its smooth and try to leave as much as you can then take a rag and tun it down the skis the direction you ski the most
5.I try to wax my skis every night but sometimes it just doesnt happen, try to wax you skis the night before so the wax has time to really bond to your skis.
First of all you should was you skis like 4-6 times before putting them on snow, I higly suggest using some low temp wax sicne they pentrate the base easier.
What you want to do is wax wait 20 minutuees, scrape, hten wax wait scrape 5 times or more ( 4-6 is enought) then you'll do the bronze brushing thing.
This is for a compleate tuneup -edges because different people like edges differently.
1. secure the ski with base up and the brakes held flat with a ruberband or shoelace.
2. scrape the base clean with a METAL sharpener.
3. search the base for any large scrapes or any scratches near the edges.
4. use a citrus cleaner to clean the base (freeskier got this one right on) then wipe off with a old rag.
5. If there arent any scratches that need fixing skip this part. Heat the base with your iorn (this helps the ptex attach to the the old ptex). do not leave the iorn on any spot for more than a sec.
6. light one end of a stick of ptex (get the color to match your skis: black or clear) and hold the dripping ptex over the skis where it needs it. the ptex will drip in little balls of fire. (these really hurt if you burn yourself with it) once you have filled all the holes let the ptex cool for a while.
7. now use your metal scraper to scrape the excess ptex off this is the worse part of the job.
8. now get your wax and hold it against your (not your moms or wifes) hot iorn and drip ptex in a zigzag patern up the ski (you do not need to do the turned up twin tips.
9. now run your iorn along the ski and melt the wax into a uniform surface (this is the best part of the job.
10. let the wax sit for about 15 minutes whil the base absorbs it.
11. use you plastic scraper to scrape everything off.
12. get off your lazy ass and go ski the shit untill you need to do it again.
I usaly do a full tune once a week and do a quick wax affter I go skiing (about 3 times a week.
This place Has good wax , tools, p-tex,base-weld,epoxy, and all the shit you need to take care of your skis, repair them, tune them up , and make them fast as fuck .
They also have good info ,how to wax ,etc.
1)If you're going to sharpen your skis, do this first, that way you wont get bits of metal in your fresh wax. Also, if you're going to fill any scratches or holes in your base with p-tex do this now.
2) USe a crappy iron or something and press your wax onto it so that it drips onto your skis, run a line of drips down the ski.
3)Then use the iron to spread the wax all over the ski, leave the iron on, its important to really get the melted wax everywhere. Don't hold the iron in one place, this can burn the wax and p-tex.
4)After you have spread the melted wax over the ski adequately (like buttering a piece of bread) let the wax dry for at least 20 minutes.
5)Then, use a plastic scraper (a stiff ruler will do) and scrape the excess wax of the ski, going from tip to tail. Hold the scraper at an angle towards you and draw the scraper towards yourself. Like so:
/-->
6)Once you have scraped off the excess wax, use a ski brush or some brush with pretty stiff bristles and brush the ski down hard. This gets all the excess wax off the surface so that the only remaining wax is in the pores of the p-tex, you do not want any excess wax on the base of your ski. When brushing stops producing a lot of wax powder, then you're good to go.
anybody who pays to have their skis waxed at a shop is a moron. just buy a block of wax for whatever temperature range you figure will work best, turn on your iron, fasten your skis to a table somehow (a couple of clamps work best), touch the iron to the wax and let it melt onto your skis, once you figure you have enough on your skis, iron your skis (spreading the wax evenly), let it dry, and scrape it off using whatever you have that works (i.e. a ruler works well). it's such a simple thing to do, i'd never pay anybody to wax my skis.
also u usually blend the parrifin with the
snow temperature wax,
old iron with no hole is as good as a actual ski iron. pretty easy,
will stink up the hose though if you do it inside
If it's an iron that's for waxing only, totally fine.
If it's a wax for actual clothes, as well as waxing (which is a retarded idea in the first place) it's not so good. The wax will go in the holes and when the thing steams yo uget wax on clothes.
yeah you need to wax new skis more since they have been factory ground and have been sitting in the shop oxidizing but you want to use a high temp wax like ch12 or 10 from swix its like red or yellow or you can buy the base prep that they make.
