Ok so i ski all freeride, no racing at all for the past 3 years. BUT i still think its incredibly fun to run gates. While i like freeride 10 times more i still could have tons of fun just running gates and racing for a day. I dont know why people hate on racing so much but it really gets annoying. Im not into the spandex or getting that serious about it but i think its really fun. dont u think we should hate a little less?
I'm not a big fan of organized races like that, but I love going up on some bigger terrain and racing down that. Nothing like going 30mph through moguls, down chutes, and over rock bands!
i love to freeride, but i am also a racer, minus the racer steez, and a ski instructor. i think running gates has its benefits to ones overall skiing ability, and i don't understand why people are so against it. yea you wear spandex in the cold for one day,its not that bad. and most of the people who knock it probably haven't run a gate in there life. and if one makes a argument that racing is for sissy's or crap like that, why don't they try slamming there shins and shoulders into a pvc pipe at 40 miles a hour 15-20 times in a row....
I think doing something like racing is really important if you want to become a good overall skier. I personally did moguls for 4 years, and I can't even imagine what it would be like if I hadn't. Good coaching and a structured environment is good in certain doses, but I just wanted to do whatever I wanted after a while.
i feel so much better in the park because of racing. i can literally feel that i am more balanced in the air and stuff like that every week because of racing (at least i think thats it because i dont spend too much time in the park). but i think its essential to getting to be very good at overall skiing.
i race with the school. id rather hit gates all day if it was jsut me and a buddy or two. no pressure and waiting around. slalom though. im not fat enough for GS.
It definately improves your skiing and a lot has come from the sport. As for people ragging on racers, i think that comes more of there attitude and fashon sense. I love running gates. I hate the structured enviroment of a race. I will run gates all afternoon, not every afternoon but some, its fun and nothings wrong with it. So if your going to make fun of racers make sure you do it for the skin tight suits they wear.
i raced for highschool. raced in our regular gear. we weren't serious enough for suits, and thank god for that. this is my 6th season. and i owe my progression to participating on the race team.
