I broke my femur on the 2nd in a motocross accident. So they put a ti rod the length of my femur in the bone, and it's there for life. They also gave me some badass pills. Have any of you guys broken a femur? I'm asking because I hear in winter when it is cold out it will affect your leg, make it sore and what not. I plan on skiing again in jan. I think I should be about 90% by then. If you got any good info it is appreciated.
Same boat as you, broke my humerus twice, fucking brutal, its been 6 months and its only at 80%. Now with a femer you shouldn't be skiing this year, it won't be 90% for sure in January. I thought the same way until i broke my arm a second time, bones take a every long time to heal, you can drink all the milk in the world like me, but it still takes a long time.
yeah i broke my leg two years ago in a motocross accident..now it wasnt a bad break at all...but it still took like 2 months to heal....it still hurts every now and again
Yeah I had a similar experience.....this thing between my legs got hard once like it had a bone in it and I think I bent it with my hand so far that it needed a plate thing in it......but it went away and just healed itself.....so don't worry about your leg man....Im sure when it gets soft again it will be fine.
I broke my femur skiing the day after easter this year. It was an extremely bad break near the top of the femur and i have a ti rod and 3 screws in my hip. I had one screw near my knee removed a month after the accident and the rod is approx 16 in long. I plan to ski this winter because of the simple fact i think i'm addicted to skiing after living in Summit County for a few months. I hope it doesn't hurt more in the cold but im sure it will. I do know that altitude affects the pain, while living at 9000ft you def. feel alot more pain
this kid i no broke his femur snowboarding(he hes gay) in the end of febuary, they put a rod the length of his femur and just now he can start doing stuff.
Breaking your femur sucks ass
Im just glad i didnt do it a few years ago when youd have be in traction for 3months in the hospital. I am still recovering from my break but will return to snow as soon as it falls from the sky. I still can't run and have nerve damage in my lower leg. Basically my foot has been numb for 7 months
i played football my freshman year of highschool.... i was the runningback.. this kid dove at my legs, my back one was planted, his helmet hit me in the knee and snapped my femur in half close to the knee.. probably one of the most painful thigs i've ever felt..
"smuggs" broke his femur compound and has a titanium rod. and was hitting huge kickers in PC all of last season. Complained a little about it when he was first hitting jumps again just because of impact but by the end of the year he was hitting bigger booters than he ever was before.
Breaking you're femur is an extremely serious injury. If the shards on bone damage main blood vessels in your thigh, you can bleed to death within 20 minutes. Or it could cause a blood clot and give you a stroke.
Its the biggest bone in the body, and it's the hardest to break. I don't remember the break though, i got knocked unconscience or passed out, I don't remember. I do remember the emt guys puting me on the stretcher, they had to put my leg in a splint. When it snapped the muscles pulled the bone into my pelvis, when they put me on the stretcher they had to pull my leg out about 3 or 4 inches. That shit hurt more than anything in my life, I felt like throwing up and passing out. That was after the morphine too. It's been only 12 days later and the pain is easily bearable. I don't have to take pain pills anymore, there is no numbness and I can move my leg for the mostpart (hard to get completely straight). I feel pretty optimistic about my recovery. I think I will be walking on my own in about 3 weeks. Jan might be a little early to ski but maybe march.
I broke my femur hitting a cat track gap my freshman year of highschool. It was a clean break a few inches from the top of the femur. They put two titanium rods in and some screws that I've had in ever since. That was almost 6 years ago and I've skied 5 seasons since then with not really any pain or discomfort.
Short-term there will be a lot of pain though. You're going to lose a lot of muscle mass in that leg that you are going to have to build back. Just train hard and do your physical therapy. And don't get addicted to those painkillers. Good luck man, hope you have a speedy recovery.
