yea i keep hearing they are plannin to open friday too.. they want to. if anything they will have the gondola runnin up to the very top by tamerac or something... it will probably be like dirt skiing. but whatever, it's still skiing :)
sorry noob..i chekt the cams and they've got some nice coverage on the runs...is that the nevada side? anybody who can get some inside info, clue us in...if they don't have any rails, i guess i can practice my nose butters.
They changed the opening date, the inversion that's going on right now has prevented any kind of snowmaking and also has been melting what little snow Heavenly has. Opening is now Nov. 23rd...and if this weather pattern keeps up, who knows if they're gonna have to change it again.
Q: I hear on the news that it has been in the low 20s or 30s in the Truckee/Lake Tahoe area. Why can’t you make snow?
A: Currently our snowmaking efforts have been stalled due to a weather condition called inversion. This is where cold air rests in the valley floor and temperatures rise along with the elevation. Inversion is common during late night and early morning hours - especially in mountainous terrain. Which means it has been in the low 20s in the Martis Valley but in the upper 30s or 40s on the mountain. Based on the extended forecast, we expect this condition to change later this week.
exactl, the cold air is trapped at the lower elevations by the warm air on top of it...Its like Mudflap said a week or 2 ago he woke up in Trukee and it was ~25 degrees and drove up to boreal and it was ~35-40... sucks dont it?
Winter has arrived! After receiving up to six inches of natural snow last Friday, followed by very low on-mountain temperatures over the weekend (perfect for maximizing the power of our awesome snowmaking system) and additional snowfall on Monday, Heavenly is set to open Wednesday, November 30, with excellent conditions on numerous upper mountain trails.
We will be offering skiing and riding in two states on some of our most popular trails, including Orion's, Big Dipper and Comet, as well as the beginner’s area and the tubing hill at the top of the Gondola. Access to the mountain will be available via the Heavenly Gondola in Heavenly Village. Snow conditions will be packed powder and machine-groomed snow, on designated runs. In addition to the Gondola, Tamarack Express, Dipper Express, Comet Express, and Big Easy lifts are slated to operate. Hours of operation will be 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on weekdays, with lifts opening a half-hour earlier at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Full-service ski school, rentals, and food services will be available on the mountain as well. Parking will be available in the parking garage at Heavenly Village or at the California Lodge. In addition, our complimentary shuttles will be operating with service to the casino corridor and from the California Lodge to Heavenly Village.
I went up today...it wasn't crowded...but it was cold.
Still though, good to be back and shreddin it.
Dipper is basically the main chair right now, orions and big dipper being the main runs, and then Comet chair is open to get back to Tamarack and the Gondola.
Hopefully this weekend uppper California will be open, hopefully.
No rails or boxes or anything either...and the snow right now is a mix between man made and the real stuff...at least it's something.
aaw you're lucky you got to go up today! I hope they open upper cali this weekend too.. it will spread the people out more. I bet it's going to be crazy crowded on Saturday. Katie we should ski together sometime.
Lol. Everyone here will probably think im crazy, But Heavenly is the ONLY place I have NEVER SKIED at in ALL OF CALIFORNIA.
At least the big places..
But really tho.. I have skied at everywhere from MT. High down in SoCal to Mammoth, Up to everyplace in Tahoe (minus heavenly) and even Mt. Shasta Skibowl.
I have even skied at the now Defunct Iron Mountain if you could belive that..
