Holy fuck are you kidding me?? I thought I was the only Rush fan on all of NS. They rule!!! Neil Peart's drumming is pure genious (attempt making that many time changes) and Geddy Lee's voice is even more powerful than Robert Plant's... ever tried playing a mean bass while singing? The amount of energy they pack for a THREE man band is amazing!!! For those Rush newbs out there, essential songs:
-2112 (20 minutes long hard rock suite, with softer parts)!!!
-Xanadu
-Cygnus X-1
-Cygnus X-2: book two
-The Spirit of Radio
-The whole Moving Pictures (Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, YYZ, Limelight, The Camera eye)
Haha....you know whats awesome.....Neil Pearts brother, is my boss of 5 years.....I got floor seats and backstage passes for free last time....been a rush fan since I was 10
Make sure you reccommend Fly By Night.....its a classic that everyone needs to know....and of course you all know "Tom Sawyer" from Deadsy's cover in the trailer of SM3? or Focused...or some MSP findangle.
For God's sake, that was a short list I made a year ago (old thread). I'm still in love with Rush, of course, and I'd definetely say Fly by Night and Working man are among their top -notch songs. There are others I love too:
-A passage to Bangkok
-La Villa Strangiata (great instrumental)
-Bastille Day (Caress of steel is sooo underrated)
But basically it's all good until Moving Pictures. Then it's rathe unknown territories for me. And piss off (lovingly, of course) to the guy who has the backstage passes, that's my dream...
ah, rush, they are so awesome. Neil pearts drumming is just mind boggling. I've been playing drums for 8 years. His stuff is so damn hard to play to. YYZ is hard, but I can play it pretty well now.
I need to go get 2112 so bad. I just bought retrospective vol. 1(I already had vol 2 from years and years ago). It's so good. I seriously, have never heard a bad rush song.
wow, didn't realize there were so many fans of them here.
one of my friends listens to them almost religiously it seems. i can't get into it at all. i can see where the talent/skill is there in the music, that guy's drumming is truly genious like someone else said, but i can't see past that voice. to me it's annoying as hell. some people make fun of pop-ish bands like fall out boy, coheed and cambria, etc. for having high "whiny" voices but yet a band like Rush is accepted as having a powerful, moving voice? i dunno, i think it sounds like a woman's voice. i honestly thought it was a woman singing until a few months ago.
don't mean to bash on them too much, hope i haven't offended anyone, i dunno.. it just doesn't do it for me.
What? How cool, I didn't know. Actually thought it was named that because YYZ is the airport code for Toronto, their hometown. Meh.
So third post in this thread... just bought "RUSH" and "Fly by night" today because it was their only records from before Moving Pictures I didn't own. Uh... it FUCKING RULES. Long live Rush.
A new record is supposedly coming out (relatively) soon. Psyched.
